Post subject:  [D8 LM] Miai Event: Orbital Defense

Asakaze finds itself close to an asteroid belt and meteors bombardments are a common occurrence. Often, these are just mere annoyances and they vaporize into insignificant minor meteorites. However, there are other times that the meteors do pose enough of a threat to the colony and require to be shot down before they do damage to any of the settlements. Thankfully, these occurances are forecast well in advance and the colony itself is able to take care of all threats.

The settlers of the colony constantly train for a potential meteor bombardment with simulation drills to sharpen themselves. Today, visitors will participate in one of these military exercises to defend the colony from a massive meteor bombardment using the remote orbital defense platforms.

Magic: Magic use is allowed.

Reading The Radar
Utilizing the radar, the Defender must detect the cluster of meteors making its way toward the planet. Giving the proximity of the asteroid belt relatively close to the planet, this is a difficult task locating the meteors from the other rocks in space. The Defender rolls Battle/Perception at TN15. On success, the Defender gains one Defence Point and an additional Defence Point for each raise called.

Stay On Target
Mobilizing the Shiba orbital drones, the Defender must guide their respective drone toward the direction of the meteor storm. There are many drones in orbit for this purpose but they are all scattered around the planet to cover more ground. One drone is more than capable to handle one meteor but this exercise requires the full attention of the defence network. The Defender rolls Piloting/Agility at TN15 to guide the drone to its destination and preps its weapons. On success, the Defender gains one Defence Point and an additional Defence Point for each raise called.

Fire Everything!
Once the orbital drone is in position, the Defender may select one of two methods to dispatch the meteor storm. The traditional method is using a guided missile which directs a sizeable payload to the target. More maverick Defenders may instead opt for a radiant energy weapon barrage, which is flashier but less effective.

Guided Missle: The Defender rolls Engineering (Siege)/Intelligence at TN20. The Defender gains one Defence Point on a successful roll and an additional Defence Point for each raise successfully called. The guided-missile does 10k8 points damage to the meteor storm, with an additional +0k1 for each raise called.

Radiant Weapons: The Defender rolls Firearms/Reflex at TN20. The Defender gains one Defence Point on a successful roll and an additional Defence Point for each raise successfully called. The barrage of radiant energy weapons does 6k3 damage to the meteor storm and each successfully called raises allows the Defender to roll another 6k3 shot of damages. These are individual shots and do not add to each other.

The simulated incoming meteor storm destined for the colony has a total of 400 Health. The Defenders must reduce the Meteor Storm to 0 Health to successful defend the settlements on the planet. If the Defenders are collectively successful, each Defender who damaged the meteor storm earns a military pin for their participation in the exercise. The pin depicts a shiny shooting star on an orange triangle and grants the Defender +0.1 Glory for their efforts in the defense of the Phoenix colony.

The Defender with the most Defence Points gains 3 Courtship Points, the second place runner-up gains 2 Courtship Points and the third placing Defender gains 1 Courtship Point. Ties are determined by most damage done in total.

I'm Doing My Part!
If the Meteor Storm has been defeated, other Defenders may still participate in the defense of the planet, shooting the meteors that are in the peripherals and could potentially harm the local wildlife. The outer meteors have 40 health each and must be individually dealt with. Upon success, the Defender earns the same reward for their efforts. They are still in the running for earning Courtship Points.

Post subject:  Re: [D8 LM] Miai Event: Orbital Defense

Having been rallied to the defense, Geppu sees the exercise as an opportunity to practice some oft unused skills!

Ascertaining the rock locations was easy enough thankfully as he worked closely with a technician on how to get the basics down and he had picked out his group of rocks he needed to take out!

...unfortunately for him, the drone controls were not something he was terribly familiar with. An entirely different model and interface from the Spider version made his control of the drones sluggish and it was a small miracle he barely got them into position at all!

Thankfully, his accuracy was always on the mark. Taking to the firing systems was significantly easier and with a series of pinpoint radiant energy barrages, he blasted apart rocks like the trained marksman he was and hopefully doing his part enough to be recognized.
-----
Radar roll was a success for 1 point, failed Stay on Target, success with 2 called raises on the firearms roll for 3 points, doing 25, 30, and 26 damage respectively.
Point Total: 4

Post subject:  Re: [D8 LM] Miai Event: Orbital Defense

Joo-Woo sat down at the screen, observing the tiny blips....and then the giant blips. So many meteors. He did some quick, initial calculations, drew diagrams, made a presentation, and also brew some tea. Finally, it was done. The perfect gathering of data. Down to the slightest detail of the quantum-radiant fluctuations. Now, time for action!

He grabbed the drone controller, and with precise movements.....parked it right i nfront of another one. Surely nothing will go wrong!

Hopefully.

He fed the data into the drone, and fired the missile! His hands were sweating as he guided the missile into the giant meteor swarm!

Only for it to go through a tiny gap and not hit anything.

Joo smiled nervously, looked around. "Erm....Good luck Skyriders?"

Post subject:  Re: [D8 LM] Miai Event: Orbital Defense

Mumei had been concerned that this contest would be some sort of simulated fight, and was pleasantly surprised to find that it was actually going to do something useful, and even protective.

Unfortunately, while the tasks used some skills she had a bit of practice in for other purposes, she could not seem to get the hang of adapting them to the current tasks. The radar proved impossible to read, but at least someone else pointed one out she could at least try to sic a drone on...and the drone almost but never quite locked on.

She actually felt rather bad wasting valuable materials to explode in space when her shot came nowhere close to anything that needed exploding. It would have been at least a _little_ cathartic to blow something up.

Post subject:  Re: [D8 LM] Miai Event: Orbital Defense

This isn't so different to what I normally do, Moriko reassured herself as she examined the radar console. She couldn't make heads or tails of what she was seeing, but that was okay, she had a general idea of where the meteors were, enough of an idea to pilot the orbital drone into position.

She was more familiar with radiant weapons, and that knowledge didn't let her down as she fired off four shots, vaporising more than a third of the meteor storm.

Tsugiharu was not quite feeling the spirit of 'everyone rally around the defense'. Did the Phoenix think this was some sort of anime where you sent the kids in to battle instead of your veteran troops? But ok, so three separate stations made sense. You'd put a specialist at each to maximize the chances of success...oh that's not it? Tsugiharu had to do all three stages himself? It if wasn't for the literal untold tons of rock hurtling towards his head, he'd be tempted to head back in to the library.

Now that he had his coffee, he was ready to watch radar.

Per/Battle 8 vs. 15, Fail

He launched the drone. Well, at least he knew up was where space was, but that was not a well placed drone.

Agi/Piloting 14 vs 15, Fail

Still, it was good enough for the guided missile to find it's way to the debris and detonate.

Int/Engineering 38 vs. 20, Pass

49 damage to the asteroids.

1 Defense Point, 49 damage.

Post subject:  Re: [D8 LM] Miai Event: Orbital Defense

These simulations again.

Last time he'd figured out how to read the radar, just barely. And this time it was much the same. All the blips looked so similar and none of them read "Rude Meteor, Please dismiss".

It took forever to get a drone in range, but once he did, he focused in. He'd been learning over the past few days and finally the point of knowing the make up of the target made sense to him. He fired the missile with everything he knew, throwing up a hand in victory when it connected successfully!

Okay, so Tenma was no pilot. But she drove, she played video games... how hard could it be? Turned out, tougher than the toughest simulator. Still, complicated radar and controls be damned, a guided missile could be made to hit an asteroid once one locked on.

Yes, technology was a wonderful thing.

Post subject:  Re: [D8 LM] Miai Event: Orbital Defense

When Nishida heard the warning sirens in the morning, he massaged his temples. What better way to start the day than a military exercise?

He listened to the instructions of the Shiba General before him, but only listened with half an ear. His thoughts circled around more important things, for example a certain Maho Tsukai problem,... where were the warning radars for that?

Distracted by his own thoughts, Nishida wasn't really able to make out anything from the trajectories and the roar of the commander, and it wasn't a good idea to sit at the drone control console without reading the manual first.

But even a blind Otori can find a mushroom, or whatever the saying was changed here. And so Nishida did his best to hit the missiles as much as possible. He launched the swarm rocket system and directed it into different parts of the meteorite shower to cover as large an area as possible to cause maximum damage.

Satisfied with himself, he lit a cigarette.

Post subject:  Re: [D8 LM] Miai Event: Orbital Defense

With the briefing complete, Ishiyo made her way to the drone controls. Locating the targets was trivial for the pilot. And her craft made it to the asteroids with no issue, she was after all a skilled pilot.

Unfortunately the Crane pilot overcompensated on her attack run, her shots going wild as she made her pass. With the simulation over Ishiyo sat back. To say she was disappointed was an understatement. The Crane quietly climbed out of the cockpit and made her way back to the Inn, not bothering to check her standings. Even if it had been top, which she knew it wasn't, the weight of failure had soured her mood immensely.

Oh, flying! Ruhe had mixed experiences from programming the drone to fly and do stuff, but here he was in command and could go all in, guns blazing! He hadn't really flown before in a starfighter except in games, and it was high time to check what Hyeon, Yul and Ishiyo were fussing about so much.

So, radars, controls, measurements, bleeping gizmos... fuck them. Let's get straight on target.

"Scorn, scorn, scorn, from meteors!" He chanted his own song rushing toward the swarm, or the big one, or whatever was left for him to shoot off and away in big explosion.

And then he started shouting and shooting. "Die, die, die, sky burns bright!"

Out of the simulator, he was grinning. "I kinda like it!"

Satoru knew many pilots were chomping at the bit for this event but he himself was fine waiting a bit to get to it. The main swarm of meteors were already dealt with but Satoru did a serviceable job of finding some potentially problematic side meteors. Maneuvering the drone there was a bit of an ordeal but he made it eventually and he place the missile to entirely obliterate a meteor and severely damage another.

all in all a solidly average performance by the Spider Priest.
