Yul read the rules. The judges were clearly most impressed by the ability of the robot to serve tea. Therefore, he would design a robot with a single mission: to serve tea.

He named it the Tea-1000.

While Yul wasn't much of a programmer, he did know enough to be able to load it with some simple programs. And he knew his way around machines and tools, at least a little bit. Before long, he had the perfect tea-serving machine. What could possibly go wrong?

The Tea-1000 couldn't lift things. Of course not. Teacups were dainty! Yul had giving it tiny little arms, perhaps even more delicate than the average Doji maiden.

It couldn't go through an obstacle course. Turning too much would risk spilling the tea! It just sat there, clutching its precious cargo.

It also couldn't explore properly. But what Yul didn't realize was that he should have improved its image recognition software...

Image

When it got to the judges, Yul set it down, unaware of the damage. It picked up the cup of tea. It turned towards the judges.

It caught on fire.

Mumei was far more used to communing with the ghosts in these little machines than to building or programming them, but it seemed like a lot of fun at least. And it's not like she wasn't going to talk to the spirits as she built it, which perhaps gave it more ability than skill to manifest those abilities over the course of construction.

Picture too big, so Link!

She wound up with a gangly bird she called BIRD-Y...Basic Integrated Robotic Drone. It could even fly for rather short distances. Truly a marvel!

BIRD-Y competently pics up the requested tools and flies them across to the drop zone in the repair bay, making a lot of people very nervous as heavy tools zoom overhead in the claws of an amateur drone.

Well founded worries as BIRD-Y promptly ignores all programming for the obstacle course and simply flies most of the way over it before crashing into a ramp and dominoing half the course into a ruin that needed repair before the next run.

After a few moments to recharge, it heads into the forest. A long while later, it returns with scratches along it's 'feathers' and rare canopy mushrooms clutched in claws and beak. Spotting the distressed drone, BIRD-Y flies on, unwilling to released its treasures in order to even assess the drone's difficulties.

Making tea also involved releasing its treasures, and that was just not going to happen. They were dropped into the teacup, which was then grasped in metallic claws. The last anyone saw of BIRD-Y, they were flying back into the fungal forest to hoard their mushrooms and porcelain, maybe make a nest to impress another BIRD-Y bot, if one should ever find its way there.

Izumi had been somewhat expecting this task and the scope of it. Enough to have ordered in a basic Bot frame ready for it. It was a child's toy technically, but that did not stop the Kitsune. Anything with enough effort and work could win, and this would!!!!

He knew computers. Superior programming would win this. Is it? Yes it is! IT'S TIME FOR A MONTAGE!!!!!

Foxeh placing the Bot Frame on his assigned work bench.
Foxeh connecting Bot to a computer.
Foxeh hard at work programming . . . look at those fingerstypefast!!!!!
Foxeh with cup of tea, reading technical manual.
Foxeh enabling the Bot's wireless network.
Foxeh completely not noticing his communicator's ears lighting up and 'talking' to the Bot.
Foxeh cheering at the Bot's correct responses to his programming.
Foxeh carefully painting the Bot's new name on its back.

FoxNet 90210 is BORN!!!!!

Image
Picture Credit = JBlancoPas on DeviantArt.

Now for the Rally!!

FoxNet 90210 loped across to the assigned tools with ease, following every instruction Izumi had programmed into it with ease. It picked up the tools . . . and paused. There was a flickering of ears as it chatted with FoxComm 210, debating the worth of heavy tools when there was a fine tuned marvel of Vulpine Engineering right there. The debate was lengthy for electronics, at least 5 nanoseconds. Enough time to come to the considered opinion of 'Sod this, I'm better than this.' FoxNet 90210 dropped the tools and moved onwards to bigger and better things.

An obstacle course! FoxNet 90210 thought this was far more worthy of its delicate programming. It sped off at maximum vulpine robotic speed weaving between the poles, bounding up the ramps and throwing itself through the hoops. It reached the end with a mighty YIP OF VICTORY. Back at the club Izumi was trying to figure out just who his errant communicator was talking to, with it's constant stream of yips, barks and growls being very distracting to him.

Now FoxNet 90210 was sent on an important mission. The future of the colony depended on it! The vital . . . photographing of a rare and valuable mushroom . . . FoxNet 90210 set off into the fungal forest, deftly avoiding all hazards before it. A flash of the ears and another yip of victory as a scan of the area located the required mushroom. FoxNet 90210 closed in for the kill . . . NoseCam 45B was deployed and with one sniff the picture was taken with perfect framing!

On it's way back to base FoxNet 90210 encountered the broken scooter. An inquisitive yip was given, FoxComm 210 yipping in concert back at the base. The scooter was nosed a little and a detailed schematic scan was made. End result was communicated - 'This scooter is borked!!! Find alternative transport!!!!'. FoxNet 90210 carried on, uncaring of the scooter's fate.

FoxNet 90210 yipped happily as it returned home, recognising it's Programmer by the fact he held FoxNet 90210's bestie, FoxComm 210, in hand. It approached and asked the age old robotic conundrum . . . "WOULD YOU LIKE A CUP OF TEA?" Izumi answered in the affirmative and FoxNet 90210 deployed it's Tea Serving 5236 apparatus from it's left paw. A miracle of whining servos and rotating appendages later and Izumi had a hot cup of tea with not a single drop spilt!!!

Izumi was ecstatic. "OHYAS!!! YoudiditFoxNet!!! Youcleverrobotfoxyou!"

Then he was told he could keep FoxNet 90210 . . . Vulpine Excitement has levelled up!

Motonator 9000+. That was Ruhe's mighty creation in the making.

As far as programming went, Ruhe had little idea what he was doing, but the natural Unicorn talent for strange languages prevailed, and the machine was taught to fly and construct, and thanks to Kaiu ingenuity - also self-correct.

EA7. Unskilled Programming. VP for 1k1. Skills: Piloting, Engineering. Error-Correction Module. TN15: 3d10 17

Then it was time for tuning. One would call it fine-tuning, but in Ruhe's case it was rough-tuning for Motonator 9000+ had to be sufficiently metal. It all went very well, superior modifications, no accidental disintegrations. Ruhe was humming some thrash metal about throttle and engines to it and he was sure it sunk into chrome.

EA7. Engineering, Boosting Awareness, Agility, Intelligence, respectively. First Two Voided for 1k1. All TN15.: 2#6d10o10k5 39 39 5d10o10k4 28

Quote:
Motonator 9000+

Skills: Piloting, Engineering

Ruhe was disappointed with himself as the progenitor when his creation failed to lift. It was the worst.
EA7. Motonator 9000+ is Heavy Lifting! TN8.: 1d10 2

But at least it could fly as a pro? It was programmed to do so! Ouch, noooo! Motonator! What have you done?
EA7. Motonator 9000+ is Flying! 2R. TN18: 3d10o10k2 12

Ruhe couldn't blame it for not being interested in damn fungi. But to fly right into some raker? That wouldn't do! Fortunately, Fundai module worked!
EA7. Motonator 9000+ is Taking Photos! TN9.: 1d10 2, Adding +3 to avoid being nommed.

It was at this stage that the power of Ruhe's programming truly showed. Motonator approached the faulty rotor full speed, clashed into it and caused a magnificent explosion! It established beyond doubt that the rotor was broken.
EA7. Motonator 9000+ is Analysing! 5R. TN33.: 3d10o10k2 10

Alas, its superior manners couldn't therefore be showcased any more. Hail Motonator 9000+, it lived hard and fast and went down amid flames and shockwaves. In the game of robotic life, it was the clear winner.

[NADA POINTADA!]

And it of cause called for an instrumental send-off with the billowing smoke of Motonator's doom in the background.

EA7. Fluff Fiddle. 3R.: 8d10o10k5 41

As he had promised Chiruah, he was present at the Robotor event. He was still busy talking to the magistrate, what could he have done better? But there was not much time to think about other things. He put on his casual clothes and borrowed an apron from the dojo and started building his bot.

Nishida did his best to carefully weld the parts together, oil the joints and wire the cables. Many people would not believe that the slim Yasuki would be a good craftsman, after all, he would only walk around in his suit.

After his bot took a rough shape, he started the programming process, something you would rather expect him to do. Instead of a densai he had his personal computer with him and plugged the interface of the bot into it. He installed the standard firmware and thought about which programs he could program in such a short time. Nishida decided to turn the small bot into a small guard and service bot and quickly began to tap into the keys.

After he had written the programs and was compiling the program he started to enhance his bot with some paint.

The result was not really worth seeing, but a bit better than the dull grey of the metal.
When the bot was ready to use, Nishida turned it on. Happily beeping, it came to life, an audio interface announced:

"Hello Master, how can i serve you?"

Nishida replied: "Succed in the trials and you may live"

A mechanical nod from the Bot and it went to the trials.

The first two tests were anything but successful for the small Y4SUK1 bot. Neither was it able to move the heavy trucks around nor was it able to overcome the obstacle course. With a few depressive beeps it went into the wilderness.

But there it started to be in its element, the Y4SUK1 bot was not skillful or strong, but attentive. He succeeded in finding and photographing a very valuable mushroom.

On the way back he met the broken scooter. The first error analysis of the bot was wrong, but the error control module recognized this and fixed the error of the bot.

A note was made in the program in the protocol:

//Beers i owe Tetsu: 1//

After the bot came back he went to Nishida again and asked:
"Master, what else is there to do?"

"Serve her Tea" he pointed towards Chiruah.

And so the Y4SUK1-Bot did. Nishida was a bit nervous, he could blame himself big this time if this failed, but much to his uprise the litlle bot performed exceptionally good. He assembled a Tea pot, brewed and served the Tea perfectly.

Satisfied, Nishida nodded to the little one. "You have done well, you may serve me"

The little bot beeped cheerily.
"Thank you Master!" the mechanical voice said happy.

It looked like serving tea was the most important feature for the robots, so Bayushi Akagi made sure “A-Chan” had a very solid tea-serving algorithm, even at the expense of some of the robot’s other programming. “Tea service is your highest priority process,” the Scorpion instructed the robot.

Optimized for serving tea, A-Chan’s delicate manipulators proved to be ill-suited for lifting and transporting the heavy crate to the repair bay; the crate kept slipping out of the robot’s delicate grippers and had to be picked up over and over again.

The robot fared somewhat better on the obstacle course, successfully navigating its way out into the wilderness where it began taking photographs. While out in the forest, A-Chan’s camera picked up some of the local wildlife … a young reaver, curious about the robot that had intruded on its turf.

Image

Directly faced with a life form, A-Chan’s programming kicked in.

“I WILL SERVE TEA NOW,” A-Chan announced in a robotic monotone. Deep within the robot, a hydraulic chamber filled with distilled water, which was rapidly heated to boiling. A-Chan’s manipulators drew a delicate teacup from within a storage compartment. Perceiving this movement as hostile, the reaver immediately attacked, savaging the robot’s manipulator arms and knocking the tiny teacup to the forest floor, where it rolled away. After a few seconds of brutal attacks which left long gashes across the robot’s midsection, the giant lizard realized it was inedible, and stalked back into the woods. Wordlessly, A-Chan righted itself by using its arm manipulators to push itself off the ground. Once it had retrieved and stored away the stray teacup, the robot began rolling away…wheels creaking and body listing slightly to one side.

Approaching the broken scooter near the outskirts of town, A-Chan’s camera focused on the vehicle's engine, while its CPU quickly performed a root cause analysis of the scooter’s motor failure. Once the analysis was completed, the robot proceeded to effect what it thought were the proper actions to remedy the situation.

“I WILL SERVE TEA NOW,” A-Chan announced again. Its hydraulic chamber again filled with hot water. A motorized whisk began to stir matcha powder into the boiling water, then the teacup was once again produced from a hidden compartment. A hose with a nozzle began to squirt green tea into the teacup, which exuded a delicious aroma. A-Chan’s delicate hand manipulators had been damaged, and took several attempts to grasp the teacup properly, but finally succeeded in pouring the steaming hot tea directly into the motor scooter’s carburetor. “ENJOY YOUR TEA,” the robot announced, creaking loudly as it attempted to imitate a bowing human, before rolling away to its next mission.

Finally returning to Shiro Yoake, A-Chan wheeled creakily up to its creator, who was seated at a low table. Detecting Akagi in its photoreceptors, the robot’s algorithm kicked in once more.

“I WILL SERVE TEA NOW,” A-Chan announced one more time. The internal chamber filled with hot water once more, but unfortunately, repeated pressure of boiling water against the damaged metal had finally resulted in enough metal fatigue for the containment unit to rupture. As the motorized whisk kicked into action, hot green liquid sprayed everywhere, soaking the table, the floor, and the horrified Bayushi Akagi. The battered tea cup was produced from a storage compartment once more, picked up by the robot’s damaged manipulator and dropped on the floor to shatter. The jets of scalding green tea slowed to a trickle as the fluid pressure dropped. “ENJoY yOuR tEa,” the robot announced, just before the leaking tea reached its CPU, causing the robot to make a sizzling sound as it released a puff of smoke and shut down.

"Um, version 1.0 is always a little buggy," Akagi ventured, looking embarrassed.

Hayato took a look at the pile of parts before him a heavy from on his face, the only thing he had a minimum amount of experience with tinkering with was firearms. Still that was probably somwhere to start? Well, no matter enough coffee and cigarettes would see him through. Cracking open a can of coffee he took a gulp before flicking a cigarette into his mouth and lightning it.

First things first, good optics. Robots needed to see, right? And you needed a good pair of eyes behind a rifle, but what were robot eyes anyways? Lasers? No that didn't make any sense.. Well he'd figure it out along the way...So picking up his wrench he rolled up hsi sleeves and got to work. Though work didn't last long, as they smell of smoke hot his nostrils, and why the F#$k was that on fire. Half a can of coffee later he had everything well in hand though and he was on to finishing up.

1 Can of coffee, 2 Cigarettes.

Alright What next? Strength? A drone needed to be strong if it was going to carry things, right? That also something the judges likely would be looking for. Which meant arms and servors, lots of servoes. How many servos is too many servos... Meh who cared, it was more important that nothing was on fire.

2 can of coffee 5 cigarettes

Alright, Hayato was truly a fan of the 'good enough' take on Drone building, and while his creation wasn't beautiful it was certainly functional, mostly... Now though it need to be able to do things... Like hunt down giant lizards and track them to their lair? Well, it it was going to do that it probably needed to be able to shoot things, just in case. Things there didn't go well though. What was this about never harming or allowing harm to come to a human? Why wouldn't it just skip that part, they weren't hunting human. No amount of flocking the screen would get the computer to bypass the prompt though, and in his mounting frustration he simply forgot what else he was trying to make it do.

4 cans of coffee 11 cigarettes

Still it was complete, or it was after he shoved a big engine in it, and now it was time to set it loose on the audience. That sounded a little sinister didn't it? No matter it was time for testing. The servos worked super well after all! and the little bot seemed like it cold lift things all day. That is could move was somethign ot a surprise, he didn't remember giving it wheels. It must of had some form of locamotion though as it passed through the obstacle course with east.

That was the last of the luck the poor thing hand though, the trek into the wilderness was nearly it's undoing as it was nearly eaten by some large flying lizard. It survived mostly intact though and managed to fly past the scooter without even stopping as it made it's way back toward the judging both. As for serving tea? Does coffee count, as that's what the drone returned with instead, though where it got it from not even Hayato could really say.

ATSUMORI STANDS OUTSIDE AMIDST A MILLING CROWD OF SAMURAI. HE IS HOLDING SOMETHING LUMPY WRAPPED IN A SHOP BLANKET UNDER ONE ARM.

"You might remember I wasn't allowed to record inside the dojo here at Shiro Yoake. Well, no worries--you didn't miss much in there this time, just a lot of tinkerin'. The real action is happening outside!"

"Now, I know how to fly a holorecorder drone all right, but I never had to build one before. I've got to say, I'm right proud of myself! It doesn't quite compare to the feelin' of releasing a panda cub back into the wild, but I'm still chuffed."

HE HOLDS UP THE WRAPPED OBJECT.

"I named this little fella my Mobile Intelligence for Tea and Exploration. Let's see how the wee MITE does!"

Building the Drone
Atsumori spent a little while fiddling with his drone's programming, though computers had never been his favorite unit in school; his first priority was adding a routine for wildlife image recognition that he'd adapted for his own holorecorder drone, and then he installed a basic tea-service module since everyone else seemed to think that part of the trial was pretty important. A prefabricated error-correction module completed the blocky little drone's software (insofar as Atsumori got bored of typing and moved on).

He used the rest of the allotted time on souping up his drone's chassis with better sensors and more processing power. And a practical camo paint job!

Thus was the Mobile Intelligence for Tea and Exploration born.

Drone Trials
MITE's stubby little arms were nimble enough to balance a delicate or unwieldy load, but it turned out Atsumori hadn't given it enough leverage to actually lift something heavy. Its miniature limbs strained and trembled for a while and then it gave up.
D7 EA--Robotics rally! Part 1, labor. Ath/Str TN 8. Error corr. mod.: 1d10 5

Next, it bumped and stumbled its way slooooowly through the rally course. Atsumori winced more than once as it rolled off of ledges and knocked into barriers. Maybe he should have gone for a less ambitious but more versatile image recognition program...
D7 EA--Robotics rally! Part 2, rally course. Piloting/Agi TN 8: 1d10 4
+0 Points

... yeah, he really should have. The wildlife-recognition routine proved too complicated for the low resolution visual data coming from MITE's low-budget optical sensor. The drone didn't identify the lizard it was supposed to photograph until it had nearly rammed into the creature, at which point only the redundant error correction module allowed it to back away in time to survive. The resulting holo-image was... not exactly what the judges had asked for:

Surprisingly, MITE managed to diagnose and fix the busted scooter without a problem, even though Atsumori hadn't given it any special programming for the job. Its fine gripping digits turned out to be well suited to the task, and the processor he'd grabbed at random out of the parts crate must have been a pretty good one.
D7 EA--Robotics rally! Part 4, scanning. Engineering/int TN 8. ECM is already used up.: 1d10 9
+1 Point

Then came the tea.... Atsumori held his breath, feeling almost as tense as though he was about to witness the delicate, easily-interrupted mating ritual of the rare Ivory Straits peacock. Except that instead of devolving into an undignified bird fight, the worst-case scenario here was that MITE might pour scalding matcha all over the judges. Or explode into shrapnel, as some of the other contestants' disasters had already proved possible....
Etiquette/Awa TN 9. ECM is already used up. Skilled! 4 raises = TN29: 4d10o10k3 29 Passed just by a nose!
+6 Points

... but that didn't happen! MITE presented the tea with stubby dignity and an unlikely grace. 'Mori even thought he heard one of the Robotics Club judges mutter Kawaii! as she scooped up the little drone to carry it off to the warehouse.

Final Tally: 7 Rally Points, with two events passed and 29 on TEA.

Satoru showed up at the rally with a fair amount of confidence in his abilities. He wasn't a robotics expert but he managed to upgrade some servos for agility, optic sensors, and processing core as well as download some piloting and engineering programs. It was nothing revolutionary but it should perform well enough for him to not embarrass himself at least.

the first task was expectedly poor, the little robot wasn't built for strength or hauling equipment from there though it got into what it was meant for and while it didn't zoom through the course at lightning speed it did complete it with a fair amount of skill.

It expertly took photos and surveyed the forest and quickly diagnosed the scooter's issue and gave a full write up on how best to fix it.

When it came to tea time the drone grabbed a cup spilled more tea on the table than in the cup and then dropped the cup before serving it. Much to his dismay Satoru was not able to keep his drone.

Hoshiko tinkered with the drone and it did better than she expected, but she was clearly not an engineer.

Koseki had been pretty excited when he heard what this event was going to be about. Arms deep in machine parts was a good time as far as he was concerned. It was just a shame that they were only doing this for the miai.

Hmm. What to build what to build? A tea-making android? A super-fast skimmer? A sturdy rover? On reflection, it was spotting the shiny new tech that a member of the Crab delegation had designed that was probably his downfall.

"Kisada's teeth! Check out these optics! Perfect for a survey drone." He made a few back of the envelope calculations, but unfortunately one of the envelopes was blown off the table as he was working. The Perceptomatic-5000 never received its full suite of safety subroutines and developed a rather serious quirk, as Koseki was soon to discover...

Challenge number 1: Automatic labour
Perceptomatic-5000 has calculated the optimal pathway. Goal achievable. Compli...ance...fzzt. Malfunction. Need input! Goal pointless. This unit is a Perceptomatic, not a Liftotron, Carrybot, or Bending unit. Next challenge please human.

Challenge number 2: Robotics Rally
Perceptomatic-5000's tracks are ready. Goal achievable. Simple objective. Compli...ance...fzzt. Malfunction. Need input!
What do these humans think they are doing? This task is not appropriate for a Perceptomatic. Calculating optimal response. Raise middle finger. Objective complete. Next challenge please human.

Challenge number 3: Search and Discover
Silence humans. Perceptomatic-5000 was designed for this task. Please stand back. Your optics are inferior. What a nice flower.

[30 minutes of exquisite footage detailing the various lifeforms of the forest followed, along with a breakdown of their mineral composition.]

What is this? Subject not found in memory banks. Must gather more data. Safety protocols indicate likely threat. Deleting safety protocols. The mission must continue. Hello vicious lifeform. Please remain still. Thank you. Number of teeth established. Bite force calculated. Continued biting unnecessary for data collection. Please desist. No disassemble! Fzzt.

The Robotics Rally had achieved record-breaking attendance thanks to the guests and visitors who had taken part. A good portion of the Shiro had gathered to scope out and watch some of the creations being tested out today. There was unfortunately also a great number of tea mishaps and drone malfunctions, which a few volunteers were standing nearby with extinguishers before anything got too bad. Regardless, there were a great number of cheers given at each drone who was able to cross the finish line.

Image

At the conclusion of the event, Asako Kishi called over the participants so that he could name the winners. Asako Chiruha lingered close by to watch the proceedings. Kishi stepped on top of a small crate as a makeshift stage.

"I am Asako Kishi, chief engineer of Shiro Yaoke. As a senior member of the Robotics Club, I'd like to thank you for participating in this season's Robotics Rally. Some of you have made some impressive creations and we hope to study some of them so that we could improve on our creations for the next Robotics Rally. Some of them might even be next season's champions. I would like to thank Kaiu Tetsu for his hard work and contribution for providing us with more than a few upgrades for our rally. The Error-Correction Module has proven to be a great success and I'm sure the club will be utilizing that component in future hobby creations," he gave a deep nod at Fundai Tetsu's direction.

"Without further delay, here are your winners. Third place, we have Shiba Atsumori with MITE. Second place, we have Daidoji Shizuku. And at the first place, we have Yasuki Nishida with Y4SUK1-Bot. Thank you for your participation, everyone." He said before stepping off the box.

Yasuku Nishida gets 3 Courtship Points
Daidoji Shizuka gets 2 Courtship Points
Shiba Atsumori gets 1 Courtship Point
Kaiu (Fundai) Tetsu gets +0.7 glory
