Post subject:  [D11 EE] Miai Event: Tanabata

The romantic Tanabata festival, also known as the Festival of the River of Stars, celebrates the once a year occasions where Orihime the weaver princess is reunited with Hikoboshi the cow herder. The two first met at a time when Orihime despaired that she could never meet anyone because of her hard work and fate would have her met Hikoboshi. The two fell in love with each other and married. However, in their marriage, they, unfortunately, could not attend to their obligations and responsibilities. They would be separated by the Fortunes and placed into the stars. One day a year, they could cross the river and meet together. On the day of the festival, people come out to celebrate their joyous reunion, celebrate romantic love and yearn to meet their kharmic match.

In celebration of the festival, Asako Naokuni and the Shiro has arranged an event where locals and guests may pay tribute to the Weaver Princess and the Cow Herder. It is said that some of the local monks and some of the governor's aide my keep a secret eye on the proceedings. Of course, some tributes will only be known to the Fortunes and their mysterious ways.

We have set up three roleplay threads for the event.
[D11 EE] Tanabata (RP - Garden West)
[D11 EE] Tanabata (RP - Garden East)
[D11 EE] Tanabata (RP - Marketplace)

Magic: Magic is allowed.

Tribute and Offerings
In this event, all participants will be offering their festival points in dedication to another miai candidate. At the conclusion, the points will be utilized by the candidate at their personal discretion.

Celebration of Love
The participant must acquaint themselves with the celebrated Phoenix folklore surrounded the celebrated Tanabata festival. The local monks take kindly to those who pay proper respects to the two lovers and celebrate their love made possible by the Fortunes, albeit only once a year.

Participants make a Lore: Theology (Fortunes)/Intelligence roll at TN15 and name a candidate of their choosing. On success, they gain either one Festival Point and an additional Festival Points rewarded for each successful raise called. The participant must name one candidate here or the points will be lost, please indicate them on the roll.

Romantic Asperations
The participants may offer a poem toward their own wishes and romantic aspirations. The poem must be thoughtful and appropriate, while dedicated it anonymously to their intended match or someone they wish to be blessed by love.

Participants make an Artisan: Poetry/Awareness roll at TN15 for their chosen candidate. On success, they gain either one Festival Point and additional Festival Points rewarded for each successful raise called.

Sending the Message
After their poem is crafted and written, the participant must ensure that their message is delivered to the Fortunes. Commonly, this is done on a long narrow strip of coloured paper and hung on bamboo branches during the festival. Alternatively, this note may be placed in a lantern and offered to the Heavens in hopes that it will earn their notice. Participants may also try their hand at origami craft, emulating the craft of a weaver to create something to house their poem in.

Participants may choose to roll either Craft: Lantern/Agility or Artisan: Origami/Intelligence at TN15 for their chosen candidate. On success, they gain either one Festival Point and an additional Festival Point rewarded for each successful raise called.

Alternatively, participants choosing to tie their poems on the bamboo branches may do so without rolling. This will earn them one Festival Point.

Acquainted Love?
At the end of the event, the Festival Points will be tallied to each candidate. There is an open possibility that a candidate could find themselves with points given by two or more participants. The candidate may trade their points for the following...

3 Festival Points: The candidate is anonymously gifted with a plushie pair of Orihime and Hikoboshi.
5 Festival Points: The local monks speak well of the candidate as a worthy match, +0.2 Glory for the candidate.
6 Festival Points: +1 Courtship Point for the candidate.
9 Festival Points: +2 Courtship Points for the candidate.

The top three candidates who've gathered the most Festival Points is said to have earned the favour of the Orihime and Hikoboshi on this night and might find themselves blessed by the Fortunes. They may purchase the advantage of Benten's Blessing at 3 experience points. Ties are determined by the most raises successfully called by their respective participants in 'Sending the Message', then by highest overall roll in that portion of the event.

Author:  Daidoji Shizuku [ Wed Sep 30, 2020 6:01 am ]
Post subject:  Re: [D11 EE] Miai Event: Tanabata

Even with some research, Shizuku was only vaguely aware of the traditions around Tanabata. As she'd mentioned to some, she'd come with the intention to simply make a political match and call it good. The idea of love - or even that she was worthy of love - had never crossed her mind before she had arrived. Because of that, she'd missed a lot of love-related traditions. Or perhaps she'd been avoiding them.

That had changed just after her arrival, with an unexpected meeting in one of the feast tents. She at least knew who she would choose. So, whatever happened, she wanted at least for Akihiko to have happiness.

Arts had never been her strong suit, unfortunately. At least not this sort of art. A pretty picture on a computer couldn't take the place of a poem specifically for this holiday. So, rather than writing a poem, she wrote something else. It was anonymous - no one would recognize the statement except the person it was intended for. On the paper, she wrote:

"I wish for this feeling, always."

Hands at least skilled from use building and typing could form it into a vessel for her not-poem. She folded it into a flower that would "bloom" and reveal the note within when you pulled on a petal. She tied it gently to the branches and left to enjoy the rest of the festival.

Asako Mal-Chin goes into this, having decided he'd try to help Asako Chiruha out, as best as he can.

His prayers for her good fortune in love and her upcoming marriage follow ancient rituals exactly, his movements crisp and precise, his words following favored pathways.

His poem however, leaves something to be desired.

My friend Chiruha
May you find your preferred match
During this miai.

His origami managed to resemble one of the Otori, which made him find some pride in it.

Joo settled in near the river, his heart skipping a beat at the thought of the coming day. Still, today was about the festival. That was the important thing. And a certain Phoenix priestess. He smiled as he started working. He understood the basics of the legend of around the festival, and the monks seemed to appreciate the nuances he wanted to incorporate.

Next up, he wrote a very simplistic poem. Simplistic, but nonetheless, it was grammatically correct. Finally.

He tried his hand at origami, and it was a difficult task, but....finally, an origami otori! He seemed happy about that.

Tetsu has found himself a bit smitten with a certain white haired maiden who blushes a great deal. He actually has a touch of artistry in him, even though he lacks some of the finer points of protocol

Alright, it's a courtly poem, not a dirty limerick. How do I make "hair of snow and eyes of ice" work into warmth... It's a bit gauche, but it gets the feelings across.

Usually, building something would come naturally, but Tetsu is in a rush, and the lantern doesn't alight properly.

"Well...that's not a good sign...may the Fortunes take it to its destination"

Dressed in his newly acquired kimono, Nishida made his way towards Tanabata. His first stop was at the shrine. He went through the cleansing rituals before saying his prayer in front of the shrine: "Orihime please give Chiruha-san guidance in the fickle times ahead. Give her the strength and power she needs to prepare for a new life, with or without me. Hikoboshi please lend me some of your patience and confidence that I will be able to make a bond with Chiruha-san,... and,... and to be happy"

Post subject:  Re: [D11 EE] Miai Event: Tanabata

Romance.

She had always admired the story of the two parted lovers - whom in life had adhered so strongly to their duties without falling for the sin of Desire in their love. It was a pure love.

With the events of yesterday behind her, Hyeon-ju now felt ready to move on in life without regret holding her back, and to live to the last word Chiyoko had spoken. To live.

Knowing the story well, and having grown up in a household with two shugenja siblings and one shugenja parent, Hyeon-ju knew the steps of the festival decently even if there were slight differences across the clans. As someone already blessed by Benten herself, it pleased the monks as she recited the right prayers.

Though when it came to writing a poem, she felt stumped. All her ideas felt banal and insincere, so instead she settled on something that wasn't a poem by any normal standards.

I'm not a roaring fire, or a soothing stream
Like the wind, I am silent but always there for you.

Well, that felt banal too, but not as bad as the attempts of likening him to the moon or stars, kind of thing.

While the lanterns were a nice touch, Hyeon-ju liked the traditional choice of the bamboo-branch the most. It was also a symbol of purity. Of flexibility and strength. With some colorful strips of paper, she fastened the message for the Fortunes and offered her prayers.

Post subject:  Re: [D11 EE] Miai Event: Tanabata

Daidoji Ishiyo had worn her kimono this evening, but left her hair loose. She had left some of the final discussions with her nakodo earlier and her expression was solemn as she entered the festival grounds.

Your father would not approve…

She managed a warm smile for the monks, holding a short discussion with them. While not the theological equal of others who had passed this way, the Crane woman still managed to hold an interesting conversation with them. One of the elder monks listened quietly, he said nothing, only nodding to Ishiyo with his own sad smile.

It is simply not possible, think of your family…

Ishiyo picked up the slip of paper and stared at the blank page for a long time. It seemed such a small space to convey what she wanted. She knew a skilled poet could say the entirety of their emotions, capture their thoughts in perfection, in but a verse. But the Crane was not a skilled port, and for the first time in her life she regretted neglecting the arts. Finally with a trembling hand she penned the best words her mind could pluck from the void:

Joyful moments pass
Only memories remain
May new joy find you

With her paper in hand, she considered one of the more dramatic means of conveying her message. But in the end Ishiyo could not steady her hands enough to risk the slip of paper. So she tied it to a tree, just one message among hundreds.

Shokomaru was sure this was a lot of bullshit. Blah blah love, dumb stories. Oh my duty! Oh my honor!

He really just though it was a shame for someone like Nara to be shit on by this inane and asinine miai.

So he wrote her a thoughtful poem.

Cheeky Poem wrote:
In darkness a laugh
Blaze on windy autumn night
You are a poo head

He folded the poem carefully, with his wishes for the insane little bat, and hung it on the bamboo. There were other things he felt, for certain, but all this time there had been pitfalls. Many of them deep and deadly, and Nara had fallen into as many as he had. She was not treated well by this sham, and she didn't have the advantage of status he enjoyed.

The moment of truth... At least for today. And it was obvious why she was here. There was only one she had seriously pursued this entire miai. Only one that she had risked her life for on multiple occasions. Hopefully her actions would speak louder than whatever poem she could even come up with on the spot (spoilers: the answer is not even a poem).

Hide gave a thoughtful prayer while thinking of all the stupidly dangerous stuff she got herself into for her. That’s dedication, yeah?

Well, moment of poem time. And Hide found herself stumped. How can she put into words her own dedication? Definitely not as a poem. So she decided to write something a bit simpler.

For you, anything.

Hide promptly hung it onto the bamboo. Not risking an accident.

Post subject:  Re: [D11 EE] Miai Event: Tanabata

A recurring theme of Akemi's relationship with Shoko was overdoing it.

Was it the dance, the moonlight ride, the princess robe, she always went a bit too far in her attempts to craft perfect memories, eventually tarnishing them with awkwardness.

And today, on her last occasion to do things right, she went even more into overdrive.

The monks were just disturbed by her barrage of questions and politely asked her to leave. She left behind a cascade of terrible drafts before going for a not really better and far too lengthy "poem". It was mostly good at showing that Akemi read military treaties far more often than she read poetry. And also that she might recycle her (disputable) ideas.

Quote:
From the Osprey, I learned dance.
From the Crane, I learned fashion.
From the Mantis, I learned duality.
From the Lion, I learned dedication.
From the Phoenix, I learned detachment.
From the Unicorn, I learned recklessness.
From the Scorpion, I learned teasing.
From the Crab, I learned endurance.
From the Spider, I learned love.

She proudly tied it to a branch nonetheless.

As far as the theology behind Tanabata, it wasn't that Ryuu was unintetested. It was that his focus was elsewhere. The storm of emotions deep in his soul, as well as the need for the Spider to succeed.

Susumu Nara was someone who deserved a chance at romance, at love. She was talented, she was attractive. And she had only earned thenire of the Governor and the judges. That could not stand.

He found himself quite inspired by his own experiences, and by the Festival itself.

Poem wrote:

He'd been prepared for a totally different Tanabata. One with chanting cultists and rampaging carnivorous lizards and possibly an eldritch trickster from Sakkaku. It was a relief for things to be normal.

His mind had only come to the conclusion for the miai a scant few minutes before arriving here, now dressed in a totally surreal yukata, patterned with anthromorphic foxes doing human world tasks. Yes, this was right.

He knew the basics of Tanabata, despite his school not exactly following the basic theology classes of other priestly studies. They also didn't teach poetry at Fox Temples. His missive was appalling . . . but luckily no-one would read it, right? Then came sending it. He'd never really tried origami, but the basics couldn't be that hard could they? Right . . . they weren't, and soon he had a very passable origami fox 'boat' to house the 'poem'.

All in all the Hyper Fox was happy. Now for some festival games!

Post subject:  Re: [D11 EE] Miai Event: Tanabata

Bayushi Akagi was entirely unfamiliar with the Phoenix ceremony surrounding the Weaver Star, but made his best attempt to participate anyhow. The tale reminded him of something Shiba Moriko had said on their starlit ride - how she had found someone she could make a life with. Deep down, the Scorpion had known that life on a starship wouldn’t have suited the Phoenix ranger, who worked so well outdoors, and with wild animals. To be honest, Akagi was starting to think that life on a starship wasn't something that he wanted any more, either.

Thinking of the little screamer that Moriko had captured and tamed in the xenofungi forest, Akagi began to write.

Poem on a paper streamer wrote:
Under distant stars
A bat flits through the darkness
Though blind, it still hopes
To find one that completes it
Treasure such fortune, when found

The poem was a bit maudlin and the symbolism was confused, but at the monks’ direction, Akagi went ahead and hung the paper streamer from a tree branch anyway.

As he set it free, the paper streamer fluttered and spun, as though dancing in the wind.

It was her favorite story. Love among the stars. She had read and watched so many versions of it since she'd been a child. Writing something for Joo-Woo should have been simple.

The story didn't make Hoshiko think of him, however. Moriko kept coming to her mind and the thought of being separated from her by the stars. Once one of them left Asakaze, years might pass before they see each other again.

The distraction did pass long enough to write a proper poem to the Iuchi.

A wandering star
What travels carried you here?
A wistful dreamer
Waiting to see the heavens
Where will destiny lead now?

The lantern took some time to get right. But, it made her happy to offer it to the Fortunes.

Post subject:  Re: [D11 EE] Miai Event: Tanabata

Ichika was not a girl raised on the lore of fortunes, of religions and history that expanded outside of what she needed to perform her role for the clan. However, every life is met with these situations to face what they haven't known before. While the story was not one that was familiar, it was one that resonated with her and that alone drove her into following the proper methods of respect as she felt was right.

Speaking, at a point, the name of two lovers whom she felt deserved such a blessing of love but her focus on the one closer to her heart.

Regal avian rests
coveted, overburden'd.
Yet, blossom's late bloom
concealed to equine mane.
Love found another, star true.

Setting the poem aside she took up the paper, folding it like she'd remembered from her youth. An emulation of the craft of a weaver, granting safety to her wish as it waited to take notice from the heavens. Setting the poem inside she knelt down beside it with a warm smile, "Good thing not every story ends with the lovers only reuniting once every year, yea?" she leaned in a little more.
