Tuning your ride

Kamui starts wrenching on the buggy. Checking the spark plug gaps, and tuning the timing. He keeps the muffler, but removes the resonator. Then works on the suspension. Front sway bar gets strengthened, and removes the back sway bar. He adjust the steeling to the new suspensions for setup.

Tuning your ride (Int 2 + unskilled + 1 VP) = TN 15: 3d10o10k3 18 1 pt

Ride to the ruin

Kamui flies through the first half course well. It looks like the time modding his buggy work out well.

Ride to the ruin (Agi 3 + Driving 2 + 1 VP + 2 CR + 1 FR) = TN 25: 6d10o10k4 28 4 pts

Ride to the world’s end

Kamui works failed.

Ride to the world’s end (Ref 3 + Driving 2 + 1 CR) = TN 20: 5d10o10k3 14

5 pts 14 TB

-----------------
Ride to the ruin (Ref 3 + Driving 2 + 1 VP + 2 CR + 1 FR) = TN 25: 9d10o10k4 39 4 pts (Agility and Reflexes are 3's)
Ride to the world’s end (Rex 3 + Driving 2 + 1 CR) = TN 20: 6d10o10k3 36 2 pts

Fusako tried to see if she could do anything about the car's performance before the race, but it seemed their systems were nothing like the ones in her work, so there was nothing she could do. Still, she took the race at a fairly slow pace anyway. She knew she was hardly going to win any awards, but at least she participated and didn't crash or spin out.

Computers/Intelligence, TN 20, 4k3 = 16 (Fail)
Driving/Agility, TN 15, V1, 4k3 = 23 (1 Point)
Driving/Reflexes, TN 15, V2, 4k3 = 26 (1 Point)

2 Driving Points

“Of course I can drive a dune buggy,” Akagi said confidently, snatching the keys from the air that the race official had tossed in his direction.

He could not, in fact, drive a dune buggy.

“Of course I can soup up this vehicle to go faster,” Akagi said, popping the hood and looking at the engine inside.
Narrator wrote:
In fact, he knew almost nothing about engines.

Taking a wrench from the toolbox, Akagi tightened the lug nuts on the engine. This will definitely help, he thought to himself. It was only after he closed the hood that the Scorpion remembered the lug nuts were actually on the wheels. What did I just tighten? The spark plugs? he wondered. Oh well, maybe it will still help.

Having finished his “improvements” to the vehicle, Akagi looked around to see if anyone was watching him - before pulling out his densai to look up how to drive a dune buggy on the Isawa Online Library. Fortunately, he found a holovid showing exactly what he needed!
Perky Isawa Librarian wrote:
Driving in a buggy race is easy! Just go that way - really, really fast. If something gets in your way… turn.

“Thanks, Perky Isawa Librarian!” Akagi said, putting his densai away and hopping into the dune buggy … a rickety cage that was mostly roll bars and an engine.

The starting gun went off, the Bayushi put the vehicle into gear and gunned the engine, somehow not stripping the gears while causing the buggy to launch itself forward into a favorable position in the race. Bouncing over the bumpy terrain, there were moments of sudden weightlessness that reminded the starship crewman of zero G in space.

As the speeding buggies entered the fungal thickets, the Scorpion remembered the wise words of his teacher. Go really, really fast. If something gets in your way…. turn. Heedless of safety, with all the confidence of a young person who had just learned a skill from a 3 minute video, Akagi floored the accelerator and pushed the engines to the max. The Bayushi laughed as he dodged through the tall mushrooms with split second reaction time.

Somehow, he made it to the finish line in one piece.

9LM Tuning your ride INT/Engineering TN15: 3d10 18 passes, 1 FR for a later roll

9LM Ride to the World’s End with 2 called raises and 1 free raise, REF/Driving (Void Point for skill) TN25: 5d10o10k4 36 passed for 4 Driving Points

Total: 6 Driving Points with tiebreaker of 36.

With a successfully tuned up ride Nakaba hit the road with blazing confidence until his buggy hit an especially rough patch of road and grinding his momentum to a halt. With a carefree shrug he focuses on safety completing the rare there after.

"Samurai here make their own fun and stay sharp for wilderness action... with buggy racing!"

ATSUMORI SLAPS ATV HOOD

"It's not as risky as takin' on a drifter or raker, but it's no drive in the park either. The locals have been doin' this for years and I'm as green as can be, but you bet I'm going to give it a try!"

Although he'd never raced one, Atsumori had handled this kind of sturdy little wilderness vehicle many times before, and he knew how to coax a little bit of extra performance out of the steering control system. The reckless freedom of the otori race wasn't something he could summon quite as readily in the driver's seat of a buggy, though, and after filming a few dramatic wipe-outs in the rounds preceding his own, he concluded--wincing--that the course looked fun, just not quite at that speed.

That decision was probably for the best. Setting out confidently at a moderate clip, Atsumori soon ran into more trouble on the uneven course than he had expected. He managed to hold on to the wheel as a fungal mass wrenched his tires sideways, but not onto his seat; he was almost thrown clear out of his buggy and had to scramble awkwardly back into the driver's position, losing precious time. He learned his lesson and kept a firmer grip on the controls as he jolted and bounced through the return half of the course, making it to the end without any further mishaps.

He wouldn't exactly come off the hero in the drone footage he'd edit into another of his videos later, but fortunately that wasn't really the point... thinking of his younger viewers, Atsumori made a mental note to stress the importance of helmet-wearing in his narration.
