Some of the characters have gotten lucky. Asako Mafuyu, a famous bio-scientist and philanthropist, has invite you to her personal riverboat 'Explorer' along with few of her colleagues. The purpose of this innocent outing is to allow the samurai to mingle with each other while watching the stars and enjoying the all-vegetarian treats and fermented drinks prepared by Mafuyu's staff. With the rains gone and the winds having dispelled both the clouds and the oppressive heat, the weather is pleasant and the night sky above the river is hauntingly beautiful, the river of stars well visible against the dark cloth of the void.

Image

While Mafuyu's invitations might have the ulterior motive of trying to learn some of the the people that might be marrying her daughter, the guests are treated with all courtesy and Mayumi's friends seem to be genuinely eager to get know everyone, even if they are perhaps tad too eager to discuss what they are working on, most topics bordering esoteric.

The ships itself can be best describe as a floating suite, having several cabins with AC, a humble mess and several bathrooms. Mafuyu boasting with a smile on her lips that there is even a small bath tub within the ship's bowels. At one point of the night two of Mafuyu's friends retreat to one of the Explorer's bedchambers to 'study', their departure marked by jeering of the guests.

However, the pleasant outing is about to be brought to an abrupt end. Something or something is trailing the vessel.

Participation
This thread is considered closed after four Characters have posted in it, confirming their participation. It should be noted that this thread has potential to be fatal and participants face a considerable risk of death. Your initial post should include your character's location on the yacht (prow, bridge or aft), as well as your Initiative Roll and your unarmored TN to be hit. Additionally characters should roll Investigation (Notice) / Perception against TN 21. Characters who pass this roll add +5 to their Initiative and can start the encounter holding a weapon. Character who fail this roll must start the encounter unarmed.

Characters are assumed to have brought their daisho and any Small weapons (including sidarms) they might possess. As other weapons are not allowed in public, character cannot be assumed to have brought anything else 'just in case'.

If you wish to insist your character brought armor 'just in case' we'll allow this - however this counts as Major Breach of Etiquette as your hosts would take offense to anyone insisting they needed protective gear on their vessel.

As always, Nara stood out in her dress style on the yacht. She wasn't really sure why she was here, but it was certainly some kind of party, so she assumed it was so there was a celebrity on board.

She was chatting away with one of the Phoenix when she spotted the sneaking on. Her sidearm was drawn in a second, ready to deal with any potential incoming mess

The Moshi was at the prow with Koryn looking at the fascinating flora. She noted that something seemed off. She kept her eyes alert for any dangers. Her hand on her side arm and handy bag in reach in for her holoslates.

Death from Below
Suddenly the calm is broken as massive claws reach out from the water, grasping the aft. The ship is shaken violently and the characters must pass Reflexes roll against TN 20 or be knocked Prone. Explorer has been seized by hungry drifter seemingly hell-bent on tearing the small craft apart. Now the Characters must defend Explorer and themselves if they want to avoid becoming the drifter's next meal!

Image

Fearsome Beast
Characters must roll Willpower against TN 15 or suffer from Fear 2 effect. (-2k0 to all Skill and Spell casting rolls for the duration of the encounter.)

Battlefield
For the purposes of this fight, the yacht is divided into three parts, the prow, the bridge and and the aft. As the beast has seized the vessel by its prow, only characters standing at the prow may attack the creature using melee weapons. Characters standing at the prow cannot attack the creature as the bridge prevents them from seeing what is going on. Characters standing on the bridge may attack the drifter with any ranged weapons they might have but may not attack it beast in melee as long as it is in water. Such ranged attacks suffer -10 penalty due to the darkness. Distance between bridge and aft is 15' and the distance between the bow and the bridge is 30'. Character may switch places by using their actions to move.

Dark waters, dark tides
Fighting a a massive river monster on a rocking small vessel is no easy feat. All TN's, including attack and spell casting rolls, are increased by 5 unless the character has Technique or Skill that allows them to ignore penalties to movement in rough or uneven terrain. (e.g. Yoritomo Bushi 1, Athletics Rank 3 Mastery)

Characters may flee from the battle as a Complex Action by hiding in the cabin of the boat, provided that they are physically capable of movement. Doing so removes them from the combat (and the thread) at the end of the current combat round, but causes them to lose an appropriate amount of honor. Characters with the Overconfident disadvantage must pass a Perception Trait Roll (TN 20) before taking this action; on a failure, they must choose a different action, and may not further attempt to leave this thread until the event has finished.

Initiative
Atena 37 (armed) - Prow - Engaged
Nara 34 (armed) - Bridge
Koryn 31 (unarmed) -Prow - Engaged
Drifter 24 prow
Jin 18 (unarmed) -Aft

So everyone has to roll to resist knockdown or become Prone by rolling Reflexes against TN 20. Everyone has also try to resist the fear (Raw Willpower against TN 15, adding Honor ranks). If you fail, you take -2k0 to all Skill and Spell casting rolls for the duration of the encounter. Also remember the TN penalty +10 if you are firing from the bridge, i.e. modify you rolls by -10.

"Uncle? Why are you here?"

Nara looked confused as she saw the face, then understood.

"Have no fear people! Mia will slay this demon!"

She moved ahead of the lovely Phoenix woman who was totally not screaming (spoiler: she was screaming), and took a shot at the big monster! It landed somewhere on its face. Maybe. Possibly. It landed at least

Koryn is rather surprised when the creature appears directly in front of him, like some tale out of the shadowlands. The kids, because to be honest he was, had obviously never seem real combat before and for a moment the blood drains from his face. He is knocked to the ground by the rocking of the boat, and barely stifles a cry. He takes a beat trying to collect himself but to no avail. He slowly takes his time to rise, his hands shaking as he reaches for the Katana at his side.

The words of his sensei come to him "Courage isn't just a matter of not being frightened. It's being afraid and doing what you have to do anyway."

The katana comes out, tip pointed at the creature, the blade wavering slightly in his hand but the Crab stands fast.

The beast seemed cared little of the storm winds that raked its skin. Nara's shot found a purchase however, the monster roaring in pain for a briefest of moments, moving violently and causing waves to splash against the boat.

Seeing an opportunity, the beast lunged at Koryn, snatching the poor man in its massive jaws, shaking its head from side to side as it tossed the poor man around like he was but a rag-doll before dropping him on the deck, blood staining the wood.

Jin felt the boat rock below him, but he was used to worse turbulances when dropping, so he kept his balance. Looking up, in the darkness he saw something...big and ugly.

Again.

He took a quick hop to the bridge, next to Nara, raised his sidearm in one smooth motion and let out a radiant bolt into its skin.

The massive monster eyed Atena for a moment, its massive nostrils flaring as it starred at her. Yet it seemed that the beast was hungry, reaching to grasp Koryn in its jaws, the serrated eight inch teeth tearing the poor man apart in a splatter of gristle and blood. The drifter gulped down what it could, what remained of the once proud samurai falling on the deck limp.
