Situated south and west of the city, the farm lands lay outside the perimeter and the city proper. The plantations growing genetically manipulate barley and rice are tended by heimin living in overcrowded dormitories while their samurai overseers are able to enjoy the comfort of their manors, most of the samurai workforce commuting from the city. While much of the work is done by machines, it is not rare to see dozens of commoners digging an irrigation ditch or picking fruits. Carts drawn by the massive otori are also an ubiquitous sight, the locals using the domesticated flightless birds as beasts of burden. While the native fauna tends to avoid the human settlements, 'unfortunate incidents' are known to happen occasionally and so the commoners are wary of the fungal thickets surrounding that creep ever closer to the fields.
Many of the landowners also raise and breed the otori, though their herds spend most of the year grazing in the fungal forests, the hotheaded and freedom loving samurai and ashigaru herders protecting the animals as they migrate from grazing area to another. Spending most of the year in the wilderness, the herders have become a romantic figure despite their duty being onerous one. Many of the ronin living in the city either work or has worked as a herder, the duty considered unsuitable for a 'proper' noble samurai.
