Capable of traveling long distances with a moderate load and relatively easy to tame, the otori are used as steeds by both the local farmers and the militia. Today the herders bring their flock to the city. Now the chicklings born three years ago are ready to be tamed - and ridden. Normally this task is given to the otori-herders, the people who follow the large flocks as they roam the vast fungoid forests. Today, the Phoenix are giving everyone a chance to partake to the Taming, a day long event during which the now three year old otori are broken in by the herders.

The characters are expected to pick a docile looking specimen, mount it and stay on its back until the bird acknowledges the human rider. While the event takes only a one time slot, if the character succeeds in taming an otori, we encourage you to spend at least an another time slot where your character learns the ins and outs of their new mount.

Magic: Magic is allowed though spells must be cast so that they cover the duration of the entire event, i.e. 3 hours. You can use multiple casts to achieve this as long as you have sufficient spell slots.

Birdie-birdie?
To have any chance to tame a half-wild otori the characters must pick out a docile looking individual from the herd by rolling Investigation / Perception against TN 15 or Lore: Biology or Lore: Nature / Intelligence against TN 20. Success and each successful raise called grants the character a Free Raise they may use later during the event. Even if character fails this roll they may proceed - they simply have to pick a random otori and wish for the best.

Mount the bird!
Once the character has picked an animal from the herd, they must catch and climb on the animal under the watchful eyes of the Phoenix herders. In order to impress the herders the character must roll Athletics / Agility against TN 15 to mount an otori in a flashy manner. Success and each successful raise grants the character a Birb point. Even if character fails this roll, they still manage to get on the bird. They just do it in an ungainly manner eliciting few laughs from the locals. Characters with Inner Gift: Animal Ken gain a Free Raise on this roll.

Stick to the bird!
The unbroken great otori will try its utmost to shake off its would-be rider. In order to cling on the mount the character must roll Horsemanship / Stamina against TN 10. Success and each successful raise grants the character a Birb point. Should character fail this roll, they lose Birb point for every Raise called as their bravado makes them fall in an amusing fashion. Characters Inner Gift: Animal Ken gain a Free Raise on this roll.


Outcome
Once you have finished making your rolls, please post your total points to this thread along with a link to the relevant rolls. The character with the most Birb points will earn 3 Courtship points, the character with the second most Birb points will earn 2 Courtship points, and the character with the third most Birb points will earn 1 Courtship point. Ties are broken by comparing the ‘mount the bird’ rolls.

If a character's final score is positive (i.e. they have one or more Birb points) they may keep their otori for the duration of the miai with the Phoenix providing stables and fodder. Characters staying on the planet may keep their otori indefinitely - the others will have to hand theirs to the Phoenix as they depart - the Phoenix do not allow local fauna to be exported. If you wish to try to smuggle your animal through customs, we can sort it out during the post game.

The Obsidian Magistrate from Shiragiku moved through the herd. A hand calmly extended as he looked at the large birds. His unblinking, icy blue eyes looking to each one for a long moment.

"Good Morning, Otori-sama." He whispered as he came across a particular Otori. It's plumage a brilliant ombre of deep purple to vibrant blue and green. A hand from the Spider caressed the beak, then the other. He leaned in, pressing his ear to the Otori's chest. "You will do well today." Ryuu nodded, as he led the bird out of the gate.

The proud Otori stood tall, stretching it's wings. Ryuu made sure that his hair was securely tied back. Concentration focused on his face, before taking a deep breath. He moved back about five meters from the creature, before running full speed. At the perfect point, he jumped, turned his torso and did a forward flip with two twists, before precisely landing on the Otori's back.

"Kweh!" The creature cried out, as the Obsidian Magistrate reached for grip. A nod, he spurred the bird into a trot, then a cant, then a full sprint. His lips curled into a wicked smile as the great bird picked up speed. Spider and Otori were one!

And then came the first turn. Rather than try to slow the creature down, Ryuu leaned into the turn, wanting to impress with keeping the beast in check. It was then that the Otori let out a shrill "Kweeeeeh!" And leapt, launching the Magistrate off it's back, tumbling into the ground. His back slammed into a barrier, before a fist was slammed into the dirt. His black field uniform was covered in dust, his hair a mess. He spat on the ground, slowly picking himself up.

The Otori wheeled around, it's neck plumage riled up, and a louder "Kweee-kweh-kweh-kweh!" as it's head shook. Ryuu adjusted his uniform, stepping up to the creature.

"You won round one, Otori-sama. I will tame you yet." He spoke softly through gritted teeth, taking ahold of the beak again, gently stroking it. "My Will is stronger than your Control. You will see."

Asako Mal-Chin wore one of his tighter outfits, not wanting to have any loose fabric tempt the Otori to pluck at his pockets or pull him to the ground.

Of course the Governor would start the miai by introducing everyone to the Otori. Hands on experience indeed.

Thankfully the years of living on Asakaze, and then being Chiruha's friend, led him to find one of the birds who had likely spent the last three years being pet and hand fed treats by someone very kind.

He'd seen the Governor do this once. He walked up the side of the fence holding the Otori in, and then leaped, in order to land on the Otori.

The Otori, seeing a shadow coming from above, stepped to the side in order to see what new friend was coming to say hi.

Mal-Chin said hi to the ground first. Then stood up, and got on the Otori in the standard fashion. At least the mud hid how red his face was.

Riding the docile Otori was comparably easy. The two were able to bond quickly, and really he could have pushed it harder, but there didn't seem much point, what with the herders laughing so hard. He did choose to bring the Otori over to the stables. "I'll call you Snow Whisper. Because of that bit of white on the tips of your feathers."

Jin stretched and loosened his muscles, and looked at his rugged garb, ready for today' challenge. He gave a bow to the local Phoenix, especially the herders who brought the animals. "Arigatou minna-sama." He then moved forward, his eyes roaming all over the possible mounts...before settling on an Otori in the middle of the pack, who seemed surprisingly calm despite surrounded by other agitated animals.

Jin counted to three... "Ichi, ni, san..." and ran off towards his chosen animal. He dodged and weaved and made a jump like his clan's namesake, vaulting over a smaller Otori and landing on the back of his chosen animal.

"Ganbatte!" He yelled as he hung on for his dear life. Luckily, the animal wasn't too excited, as it wasn't too difficult to calm down and slowly trot out, happy with himself and his mount.

Mumei's eyes lit up as it was explained that they were to move among the herds and ride one of these lovelies. Granted, the heat today made her wish for something lighter than worn jeans and the synthetic blue shirt that was starting to fray and the hems.

First, she moved a bit to he side, unfolding her tattered holoslate and scrolling through to the correct incantation.

Actually...not that one. She realized a few words in that she'd paused on a fire invocation...which would be a very bad idea. With the proper invocation, a breeze swirled through her hair, happy to carry her meaning to the Otori she had an eye on. Iridescent blues set off by a golden crest were irresistible,

"Who's a lovely, giant, sparkly bird? You are, my girl. C'mere, and let's dance, pretty." She strokes the undoubtedly dangerous beak, murmuring to the Otori. "Head down now, this'll be fun, just wait."

Encouraging the bird to duck her head, Mumei takes two steps back, and then a running leap over the bird's head, spinning around in midair to land properly on the Otori's back. Squawking in surprise, the Otori's head came back up and swiveled around to look at her new rider, who promptly scritched her head feathers. "I think you're a Hiroki, aren't you? It fits, neh? Just a turn around the herd, for now, ok?"

Leaning over to wrap her arms around the bird's fluffy neck in a happy hug, Mumei and Hiroki trotted around and through the other Otori, coming to a stop near the other miai contestants and their birbs.

Shion was actually excited about the opportunity to go and meet some of the local fauna. Not that she was particularly knowledgeable about these things - she liked animals a lot, of course, but she had only learned how to train more... usual ones.
Nor had she really learned to ride... although looking at the task at hand now, that seemed like a good idea for the future.

But well, it was a nice chance to see - and hear - some of the things in the planet. And the event itself... depending on what happened, it just might be inspiration for a song later.

As she approached the animals, she saw some of the people looking at them and analysing them carefully. She... tried to do something similar. Not really seeing much difference aside from the variations in plumage and beak shape, she tried to go by ear, as she often did. And one of them seemed to call to her nicely. That must mean it was docile... right?... She called it "Kurikoo", based on the call it gave her.

"Oi Kurikoo! We'll get along, won't we? Sure we will!", she says, extending her hands to the bird... which looks at her a bit uncertain at first - although not as uncertain as Stray looking at Shion from the back where he was tied to a tree so as not to frighten - or be frightened by - the Otori.

After some time to get to know each other, Kurikoo did seem to get a bit more comfortable with Shion, and she managed to get on it easily with a stylish side jump when the creature lowered its neck to greet her. "Good Kurikoo! Good girl!" - she said as they started the ride proper. She didn't know why, but something on her 'Warks' made her feel it was a girl.

After the good start, keeping astride the Otori was challenging, but not terribly so. Shion might not be one of the fanciest riders - and neither did she expect to be - but she proved an able one, and seemed good enough to gain the bird's trust.

"We'll be good friends, won't we Kurikoo? I know we will! Now... time to meet a friend", she says as she holds the bird and takes it closer to Stray, already expecting she'll have some more work to do to get them to get along...

Satoru had sharp eyes, always has. He scopes the Otori fields and sees a bird that looks docile enough to ride. The Spider takes off across the field and while he was an athletic man agility had never been his strong suit, he jumped onto the large bird but misjudged it and ended up sprawled across its back on his stomach, it took time while the bird was running and the bespectacled shugenja was bouncing around on its back but eventually He scrabbled and was properly seated on the beast.

Once he is on the bird he holds on for dear life and just barely manages to stay on long enough to calm the beast down and lead it back to the group. It seemed this one had accepted him as its rider. Not the best showing but he hadn't embarrassed himself. too much.

Michiya had very limited interactions with animals. These giant birds were completely alien to him. All he hoped to do here was not make a fool of himself.

Fortunately, he managed to identify a bird that seemed more interested in pecking at the ground than arguing with a potential rider. With a somewhat pliant, uninterested though not necessarily cooperative otori, he is able to coax it into remaining calm as he moved with a capable enough grace to get atop it. Once there, he slowly and steadily started trying to guide it around the area. It was not an overly impressive showing as he seemed lucky to pick out a relatively docile bird, but he at least showed a basic ability to not look like an idiot in the process.

So the Phoenix wanted her to face a beast, jump on its back and stay there until it tired itself out?

That was... strangely relevant to her skillset. Hida maneuver 36, how to face a creature with near infinite resistance to standard weaponry but not infinite stamina. Though she guessed it would be for the best if she did not fully complete the maneuver, as the last theoretical step was to suffocate the weakened opponent.

Having perfectly misunderstood that she was judged on her taming ability and not her courage, she went for a big black Otori with scars and personality, the kind even the other birds avoided.

And while she still had some issues with her fleshcraft, it was definitely very good at supporting her own weight as she used it as a pivotal point to move in one swift, almost elegant movement from standing before the bird to sitting behind it.

As for the rest, she was Hida AND stubborn. There was just no way she was letting go.

In the end, the beast bowed, she raised both her fists to the sky and shouted a triumphant: "HIDA!"

Moriko had been around otori since she was as high as the massive birds' ankles. She'd studied first hand as her parents picked out the best creatures for breeding; helped as they were trained for riding and other work. She walked amongst the feathered beasts fearlessly, chatting to them and stroking their plumage, until she found one that nuzzled her hand, intelligence glinting in its eyes.

She slipped onto the otori's back with practised, agile grace. She knew just how to sit, and just where to hold the feathers so as not to pull on them, or accidentally kick the vestigial wings. She kept up and almost endless stream of murmured conversation the entire time, soothing and reassuring. It wasn't long until she had the otori well in hand and was on the way to forming a solid bond.

Giant flightless birds were not something one had much of an opportunity to study in The Hive. How could one even begin to evaluate them without some baseline data? Could you see their value in their eyes? In their beaks? Did foot size matter? In the end, Tsugiharu had nothing to go on but intuition, and picked a bird that at least was not visibly ill.

And then he had to mount the thing. Well, ok, that was like getting on a motorcycle...which is also something he hadn't done, but he understood the theory. Of course, motorcycles were unlikely to decide they'd rather being on the other side of the pen. This gave the crowd quite the laugh as Tsugiharu got to hop around for a bit with one leg over the bird, and the other hopping to keep up before he finally managed to scramble on board.

Now the bird just had to deposit Tsugiharu in a nearby convenient pile of dung, the Phoenix could all point and laugh about how stupid the Spider were, and go about their day.

But what neither those literally nor figuratively bird-brained counted on was that a determined Spider with his Will set on a thing could not be turned aside. He clung to the bird, and while it tried to be rid of him, it could not. In the end, by their own rules, the Phoenix had to give Tsugiharu the Bird, and he would have a fun mount for the miai at least.

And maybe a snack for the ride home.

Bird riding? Geppu had killed enough birds and been attacked by enough angry bird spirits to know that he was not a friend to animals...but he'd give it a shot. Walking through the pen, he stared each bird down until he came to one that caught his eye...one that shared red eyes like his own. Pausing before it, he reached up and slowly ran a hand through it's chest plumage, causing it to give a soothed sound. Perhaps...perhaps this wouldn't be so bad. "You aren't going to like me in a bit, but it'll pass," he said to the crimson-eyed bird.

Slowly and somewhat awkwardly, like someone who had never tried acrobatically mounting a bird before, the Spider hopped up on the nearby edge of the pen and leapt off in a single smooth motion quite athletically...but it was at this time that his feathered friend chose to take a step forward and very nearly make Geppu land face first in the dirt, but he managed to twist a bit and land on the creature, who immediately gave a 'WARK' of surprise.

It would seem however, that if he wasn't amazing at leaping onto birds like some sort of Unicorn heathen, he was at least good enough at holding on. As the otori shrugged, swayed, and otherwise used every tool in its arsenal to send Geppu to his hindquarters on the ground, the Spider held on, implacable. When the bird had finally worn itself out and settled, the raven haired man reached forward and ruffled its head plumage a bit. "Spirited...you'd make an excellent shock trooper. I shall call you...Ikari." And with that, he'd walk the bird over back to the handlers and carefully dismount.

Giant bird riding? Luckily perhaps for Hayato giant bird riding was nowhere in his job description. Unluckily perhaps, that meant he had little experience in this kind of activity. He tried not to let that dissuade him though, today was supposed to be a good day for trying new things after all.

So stepping forward he tried to pick a somewhat docile one from the pack, an effort which went ratehr well honestly as he found one to his liking that didn't seem intent on snaping off any of his limbs. Mounting the beast was another matter though, but one that he did quite well. The docile bird combined with his own experience with climbing cliffs and other outdoor activies allowed with to mount smoothly and even perhaps with a bit of flare. Moments later he was riding the bird around the field, with no indication he would fall off anytie soon.

It was a thrilling experience altogether, but when the Phoenix tried to tell him he could keep the bird for the duration of the miai he had to decline. If there was one thing he learned yesterday he wasn't the kind of person that could properly care for such an animal. Plus, while no money was changing hads, did it have the feeling of a major purchase, and that was something he should avoid for the day.

Hayato decides not to keep the Otori

Animals, ugh. The cute ones were fine and all, but the big ones? Not her thing. Especially livestock or mounts; They tended to be ornery and smelly, not like a good motorcycle.

Yet here she was. And if they wanted her to do this, she would do it right. She had no eye for these sorts of things, even as an investigator, and picked a bird at random that happened to be quite ornery. Still... the bird would not get the better of her, this she vowed.

Noticing it was near some boxes she decided to surprise it and ran up the boxes, literally doing a flip before landing on its back. The bird was indeed surprised and it bolted. Fortunately Tenma managed to hang on... even if she had to hide how startled she'd been in return.

While the other Samurai milled about, performed their feats. Ichika roamed the area where they'd herded the untamed Otori. Looking for one that caught her eye, one that seemed to promise her connection. Finding one milling about, watching the others that were being tamed and ridden. Ichika approached the beast carefully.

"Good morning, a fellow poet maybe?" Ichika said to the Otori with a light smile, bringing her hand up to the side of it's head and stroking it. Docile, as it was, at least.. more so than some of the others, the Otori let herself be pet. "I like mornings too," she smiled again.

Bringing her hand along the creature's side, gracefully petting it, she turned that grace into a graceful leap up onto the creatures back. Resisting her, as the beast was wont to do, Ichika leaned down into the beast. While it wasn't particularly graceful, or showy, she held tight when she needed and tenderly, not unlike a hug, otherwise. Soon, the beast calmed and she righted herself upon it.

Once the Otori settled, Ichika was righted, the girl smiled brightly as she reached forward. Brushing what would appear alike the Otori's cheek. Along a few blue feathers. "You look like a Mairi.." she smiled, careful atop the creatures back. Feeling as if the Otori responded happily to the notion. Brushing her neck with a tender caress.

When it was time, she was aided down by those awaiting. Worried she might, and careful to not, hurt the Otori she'd so recently dubbed.

Ishiyo hadn't planned on being a mighty tamer of birds, but the animals were just so adorable. Still clad in a dress uniform from her meeting with the governer, the Crane pilot stepped into the field and took a look. Being well-educated and well-bred she immediately spotted the absolute best bird for the task. The Phoenix ranchers horror as she approached one of the more ill-tempered animals was surely just an act. The heimen stable hands quietly made bets off to the side.

The Daidoji held up a hand and gave the bird a polite, calming smile. Sadly birds are not people so it merely 'WARKED' at her then scratched the ground profoundly uninterested in the Crane. That, that was a mistake. No one, no one every snubbed a Crane in a social setting. "Alright bird...we were going to do this the nice way but you-eh attitude is unbecoming." The Phoenix were shaking their head, heimen were doubling their bets.

Then the surprisingly agile Daidoji broke into a small sprint and sprang up, and before bird or Phoenix could really react, landed in a most dignified manner upon the bird.

The bird was a little upset by suddenly finding a Daidoji upon its back, and it started to squak and hop. When that didn't work it shook its body and fluttered its wing. Unfortunately for the beast Ishiyo was a tenacious lady and eventually the fight was out of him. Off to the side some Phoenix wiped sweat off their brow and let out a sigh of relief. A bunch of angry looking heimen handed off credits to a much smaller group, one of the oldest was grinning ear to ear as he took their money. "Ha! I told you, these Crane are all fops but with them Daidoji, well they's a stubborn lot." He dipped his head to the Crane woman, "Oh my lady, my lady. I will drink a toast to you tonight!"

For her part Ishiyo now sat the panting irritated bird like some statue of yore.

You could say Izumi was excited by this event. Any Kitsune would be for sure, but Izumi was extra excited. He could barely keep still waiting for his turn, and when it came he was straight in amongst the birds staring up at them. Until he found one that stared back without blinking and matched his constant movement.

"You! Your'etheoneforsure!!!"

Then came the tricky part. He could barely reach . . . No matter FULL ON FOXEH WILL DO ANYTHING and not care about how ungainly it looked or how many people laughed. Eventually he was onboard and facing the right way. The chosen Otori gave him a look of 'Are you done yet?'.

"Let'sdothis!!!!"

The handlers let go and the Otori enacted Operation Dismount Fox. It was poorly planned, the Fox General having placed his forces to cut off Otori reinforcements and sent an elite Fox operative to neutralise the Otori General by sitting on it. Which Izumi did. Very well. Very loudly.

"WOOHOOO!!!! THISISGREAT!!!!"

No matter how many times the Otori dashed from side to side or tried to throw the little Kitsune, he clung on with a whoop of exuberance. Eventually the Otori tired and accepted chatterbox Kitsune as it's master.

"Awwwwfinishedalready??? Howaboutanotherdashoverthere???" He pointed randomly and pushed with his knees like they did on the old Broadcasts about Unicorn cavalry charges. The Otori obediently dashed, head down in the direction Izumi wanted and stopped when he pulled on the reins.

"OHYEAH!!! Dasshu! YournameisDasshu!!!"

Nishida arrived at the farmlands. He wore his casual clothes: jeans, vest, shirt.
Akechi accompanied him. "Watch out Master, the Otori seem extremely proud,"Akechi warned Nishida.
Interested he looked at the Otori, there were so many of them, he was fascinated by the different colors and patterns the animals have in their plumage. Nishida chose one of the Otori that had golden plumage and approached it.

Nishida went straight to the Golden Otori and bowed. To his surprise, the Otori lowered his head in a similar manner, which Nishida took note of to mount the bird.

The Golden Otori was highly unhappy about the sudden mounting and gave his best to throw Nishida off his back. However, the bird had not expected the penetrating nature of the Yasuki. The bird may be proud, but Nishida was proud. After some time of rodeo, the Otori gave up. With a grin, Nishida stroked the plumage: "I give you the name Lucky, may it bring you and me luck"

After dismounting Lucky, Nishida went back to Akechi again.
"Fascinating birds, too bad we can't export them to Green Carp" - Nishida
"Too bad, indeed. Impressive taming, Nishida-sama, your skill with animals are ever keen" -Akechi
"Thank you, i'm glad to got a rather tame one." - Nishida
"I would not account to that, have you see the performance of the Spider? He got thrown around pretty hard" -Akechi
"Huh, really?"

To have any chance to tame a half-wild otori the characters must pick out a docile looking individual from the herd by rolling Investigation / Perception against TN 15 or Lore: Biology or Lore: Nature / Intelligence against TN 20. Success and each successful raise called grants the character a Free Raise they may use later during the event. Even if character fails this roll they may proceed - they simply have to pick a random otori and wish for the best.

Ganbold strode up to the corral. "Hey, Phoenix-san. Those the birds we're supposed to ride?" At the affirmative, the big Moto nodded sagely. "Then I shall riiiide...THAT ONE!" He gestured so as to indicate a bird that was standing rather still among the flock, but had truly splendid plumage.

Waiting for no leave or any man's say so, he leapt the fence and approached the bird in question, at one point glaring at a more aggressive bird until it backed away, squawking apologies. Having reached his steed, the scarily affable--or is it affably scary?--Ganbold gave it a look in the eye that said "don't mess me about on this one, bub," and reached out a hand to give it a stroke across its crest and a pat on its neck. For reasons that remain unexplained to this day, the bird chose not to eat one of Ganbold's eyes, but instead fanned out its wings to permit him to swing up into the saddle like he was born to it, of course, the bird chose that moment to move and Ganbold ended up perched atop the thing as it took off across the yard. He had to waste precious seconds getting a mighty thigh over the other side of it.

Perhaps predictably, the bird balked at carrying the bulky Moto, but Ganbold was a Moto Born, the proud son of generations of horsemen. And while this was no horse, the principle was much the same. Each buck and shake was met with a firm admonishment and an easy tightening of the thighs which kept Ganbold very much in the rider's seat. In the end, the Great Otori was forced to acknowledge its new partner in crime. Moto Ganbold, space marine and bird-breaker extraordinaire!

"I shall call you...Ishmael!" Ganbold proclaimed to his newest buddy. "The proud name of a survivor!! For you trucked with the Moto and I have let you live to bear me about in friendship! Haha!"
