Honestly? The pre-game that was basically just an extension of the actual game itself, with dicerolls and events and everything, but was still called "pre-game".



Shiro Hiruma's pre-game is actually not a strange pre-game, as it was a sequence that helped set the tone and transition the PCs to the location of the game. It is actually a very good pre-game scenario.

No rolls, no complications, just clearly setting the tone and letting the impending doom settle on the PCs and players.

Next-level pre-game idea: You play in the post-game 50 years in the future.

My strategy for playing in threads that take place after a dangerous flight has always been to describe my character as being a little pale, and then if they die just turn them into a g-g-g-ghost!

Not if your pre-game character ends up different than your in-game character.

Pre game as a bunch of goblins establishing their new village, sorting out a well, building shelters, starting to get in food and capture some animals for domestication, get the shrine built for the shaman.


Then . . .


Have assaulting and killing all those 'monsters' and their 'evil' settlement as part of the real game.

Yes, I have done exactly this to my tabletop group.

Pregame is when you play a solo string intro that feels like a wake before the heavy basses tell you in the main part how you died.

We did the opposite once in 5e DnD; Party got wiped out at level 1 by a bunch of kobolds, so everyone made kobold characters and played as the kobolds that had just finished looting the PCs and had gained a new sense of independence now that they had "stuff"
