Fan-Con woo!

Knowing there might be a tsukai on site was a bit of a downer but it didn't stop him from having a blast. Volunteering for Asako Chiruha was a no-brainer. That way he got to spend a bit of time with her, hear all about her new game, and get backstage access to all areas. Useful for a bit of Investigation...

Roleplaying games were one of the many ways in which the Firefly passed the time in deep space exploration or between shifts in the asteroid mines. There was no chance that Kosrki was going to miss the opportunity to play a new game. As a volunteer he got to choose some events before the general tickets went on sale so he was able to score a seat at the table for Adventures Beyond the Rim. He instantly clicked with the system and Gunso Raiden Kagetora was born! In this game the Proud Warriors of the Eternal Empire had been sent beyond the Galactic Rim to spread the word of the Divine Empress to new galaxies. It was stupidly good fun and everyone enjoyed his portrayal of the stern but skilled warrior, even if his broken-ass combos made the combats a bit too easy.

Starlight Miko Crusanders was an old favourite although he hadn't watched it for years. He couldn't answer the questions about newer spin off series but he'd memorised the blessing incantation of his favourite character when he was eight. All Firefly were trained in Kenjutsu because it was a remarkably useful skill in close quarter combat, even in the era of radiant weapons. His kata was flawless so the judges were impressed, even though he missed out on the figurine it had been fun.

In the end he was awarded a gold badge and the title of Fan. He also picked up a few souvenirs with his stipend. Where else was he going to get a Drifter plushie and a signed copy of Adventures Beyond the Rim?

Satoru wasn't huge into fandoms, the nature of his work kept him away from being able to really dig into a lot of this sort of stuff. However board games (or an approximation of them made from what they could find) were fairly popular in his unit as they could be played without connection that and role playing games.

This meant not only did he have a lot of practice playing Space Colonist but that he often played it against actual colonizers. Not that that really helps too much with the game play many aspects of it were non sensical when it came to what actually goes into colonizing frontier worlds. But the mathematics behind it were solid. Satoru crushed his opponent in quite spectacular fashion.

afterwards he wandered over tot he Starlight Miko Crusaders area and figured he would test himself. He was no expert but his mind was a sponge and he had seen enough episodes to answer a lot of broad general questions. Then reciting prayers was something he did extremely often, considering he was a priest. Memorization was second nature to him. When it came to weapons demonstration however he did surprisingly well, mostly meaning he didn't hurt himself or break anything which was good enough for him.

After so many activities he figured he would relax a bit by just volunteering to help out where he could. donning a shirt over his priest robes he directed people with questions as he had memorized the Con map before arriving.

Ever since his talk to Chiruha a few days previously Izumi had been preparing for this. Just like with his Flying Fox wrestling outfit he'd put together a pretty faithful rendition of The Masked Fox, a hero from a low budget Minor Clan Alliance cartoon show promoting the smaller clans working together. In fact, some of his Flying Fox costume had been repurposed into the Masked Fox or . . . 'El Zorro Enmascarado' as he was sometimes known. The bright green outfit was visible from some distance, and any Minor Clanner would recognise it instantly. Maybe not the Great Clanners.

He'd enjoyed playing Explorer Fleet earlier so the game focus of this Con was great for him. He dived into a game of Kyuden and Kenku, rolling up a Kitsune Monk with some decent skill and ass-kicking his way through a great fun game with some locals. They particularly liked the way he framed his insults before kicking the bad guys into next week.

With so much time spent on RPing and strolling around in his costume he almost missed out on the big Space explorer contest, but managed to enter just in time. In typical Izumi fashion he went BIG . . . and went home as his colony failed on a few high risk gambits that would have won him everything if they had actually worked.

Yul had put in his time volunteering. Time to hit the con scene! Trying to play it cool, there was nevertheless a bit of an excited spring in his step as he went directly to the Starlight Miko Crusaders bit.

Now, Yul thought he knew SMC pretty well. But as the questions came in, he realized two things. One, a show that had been doing variations for three-hundred years had a lot of lore. And two, watching the same six discs in the common room of your carrier didn't exactly give you a broad base of knowledge. "Uh... by brightest day, with brightest light, we... something something... evil... something fright?" He said, striking a dramatic pose, replica weapon in hand.

The blade fell off. Yul winced.

Later, Yul sat down to listen as someone told a story, idly filling in marks on the paper in front of him as the man talked. Sometimes Yul talked. Sometimes other people talked. Eventually Yul left.

He never realized it was a game...

There was just so much to see and do and the shopping was kind of overwhelming. Though with her funds, Mumei chose not to be too tempted. Maybe a patch for her new used jacket?

She found herself on the fringes of of one of the role-playing games being demonstrated, it was some odd thing where you played as drones that had a lot more personality than most of the ones she knew. But sure. The character was slapped together with minimal attention and just enough skill to be competent, but Mumei had a lot of fun portraying a rogue gardening drone with lots of flailing arms as she chased things with her sharp +1 garden shears and bug spray of choking.

And then, shopping with Akemi...well that Chikushudo series outfit was kind of a find, wasn't it? Besides, the dancer really could carry it well, gaining her at least some credit, even if she hadn't made the outfit herself (or even paid for it herself).

Flush with a pretty costume and childhood memories, she dove into the True Miko experience...and discovered that she really, really, really had missed a lot of the franchise out there--like most of it. And then she tripped over the haft of the plastic naginata she tried to demo, and really...the less said the better. If the plushie ears were real, they'd have been drooping as she finished that gauntlet.

"Heya mates, we're takin' a break from the miai excitement here on Asakaze to bring you a little look at a different kind of event... Fan-Con! Oh, wait a tick."

HAND EMERGES FROM FOLIAGE AND PULLS AWAY A BUNDLE OF LEAVES AT FACE HEIGHT. UNDER THE DISGUISE, IT'S ATSUMORI

"That's better. Where was I? Oh, right. If you're on Ujimitsu or someplace else with big cities, you might have been to one yourself, but over here Asakaze is havin' its very first Fan-Con ever. Let's see if I can fit in here as well as out in the forest, eh?"

Perhaps Atsumori's makeshift ghillie suit wasn't quite what the convention organizers meant by 'cosplay,' but the volunteers who waved him in did have to admit it was effective. He'd fashioned similar kinds of camouflage many times before, after all. "Ooh, you're, like, an Asakaze version of Master Tree from 'Teenage Lizard Princess' Season five!" one young volunteer exclaimed as she dragged him closer to snap a picture.

"Right on. We'll go with that," Atsumori agreed with a cheerful shrug.

Little Atsumori had always been more interested in playing outside than watching cartoons, but his sisters had been highly invested in Starlight Miko Crusaders and frequently drafted Atsumori to play whichever role they and their friends were missing that day--sometimes the villain, though more often Yoritomo Rei on account of his willingness to set aside common sense and climb trees to replicate her signature 'strike from above!' double kama attack. He figured he could remember enough to get through the trivia event, and maybe even win his younger sister an Asakaze souvenir she'd appreciate. The actual fine details of the Starlight Miko corpus were much more numerous and varied than he'd ever realized, however, and he utterly bombed the trivia, though he salvaged the family pride somewhat by reeling off Yoritomo Rei's Miko Incantation from memory. He'd just have to buy his sisters something local in the exhibit hall instead of winning it for them, he supposed.

As he strategized the best way to gain more resource cards in his round of Space Colonist, he wondered--not for the first time--why nobody ever made a game where you stopped colonists from stripping a planet's resources. Sure, he managed to snag more 'mountain tuna' and 'lumber' cards than anybody else at his table, and that was great, but a real colony couldn't just keep logging the same spots indefinitely, it just wasn't realistic. Nature didn't work that way, and sooner or later it got its own back...

After the final second counted down to declare the conclusion of Asakaze's first-ever Fan-Con, the area erupted in applause and cheer as the event was over with no incident. Chiruha was called over to make an announcement and they made a make-shift stage for the committee member in form of several cargo boxes. She wore one of the volunteer t-shirts which was bright teal and there was the graphics of several tall mushrooms, each acting as a sort of stage for the things featured at the convention. Fuu the Fawn was showed seemingly meandering this forest of mushroom geekdom. She held one of the exclusive Fuu the Fawn plushies under one arm.

Chiruha tapped the microphone she had been handed before speaking, "Hello? Is this on? Oh! Hum...Hello, all attendees of Fan-Con! Thank you for making Asakaze's first Fan-Con a great success! Everyone is already a fan for being here! You've been awesome. The Bring-Fan-Con-to-Asakaze committee has been hard at work and we're truly happy to see Fan-Con a great success here and most importantly, seeing everyone have fun! We've succeeded in our mission! Thank you, everyone!"

There was a round of applause before Chiruha spoke again, "I also want to thank the volunteers who've put in some of their important time in helping us. We've exceeded the projected attendance number and we're glad for your extra help!"

"Finally!...Do you have Thermal Heat Energy for Water? Or Wood for Gas? Our diligent Space Colonists have worked very hard in colonizing the planet but ultimately there is only there can be only one winner and champion. your Fan-Con Asakaze Space Colonist Champion is...Kuchiki Satoru-san! Well done!"

There was another round of applause given and Chiruha gave a few bows of gratitude before stepping off. The results of the convention were posting at the walls for all to see.
