“Hai. My last tour was counter-insurgency. Every day we’d leave the barracks, patrol through somewhere like this club and... normally nothing would happen. We’d see the locals, make the rounds and head back. But some days, you get shot at. Or a bomb goes off. Or you have a sniper somewhere.”
The lion purses her lips at the memory“And those days? They were just like the rest. It gets normal after a while, a couple weeks go by and samurai start getting fidgety. Why haven’t they been shot at yet? Is something worse coming? Then you come back to somewhere safe and stable and...”
Now her expression includes a frown“It’s normal. Their normal. But not your normal. Not for a while, until you get used to it. Once you’ve been shot in your bed it takes a while to sleep soundly again.”
