I usually go 5'8" or 5'9" but felt like i was always going for large not large as a result. So i went with average for once.

Well 5'6" to 5'8" would be average for modern japanese men. You have to wonder how much of that is diet change over the past 100 years. Women still trend 5'1" to 5'3".

Further south asia is a little shorter too.

People used to no gravity will have some additional height. Pilots might have a tendency towards less, as it let's them fit in more space craft. :-p

Not too smol and not too big for pilots.

I think I saw for moderne requirements it was not shorter than 5'2" and not taller than 5'8", with also further requirements for how tall you are when sitting (so overall height isn't the only factor).
