Yul shook his head. "Nope." He said dryly.

Again, he shrugged, holding the bokken casually. "I think I see where you're going with this, but go ahead." He said, looking at her with a smile, but narrowed eyes.

“I will be honest then, as bushido compels me to be.”
She points at him with the bokken

“If you assume that every single problem, even someone else’s problem, can be solved by a simple exercise of your skills then that’s not confidence, that’s arrogance. You don’t need me to tell you what happens next. You see a dinosaur approach you, you think you can kill it, maybe you can, but there’s a priestess right behind you and if you die you put her at risk. You try to solve her problem as well as your own and people get hurt.”

Her voice very firm, as though repeating something drilled into her
“Sometimes the bravest thing you can do is stop, think and then fall back. You don’t win by dying for your lord. You win by making another samurai die for theirs.”

Yul's lips pressed tightly together. He was silent for some time, staring at her.

Finally, he nodded slowly, turning back to his forms. "I know all of this. Believe me, it's run through my head any number of times since then." He sighed. "I guess at some point I just got sick of being told that I couldn't handle it." Sighing again, he stopped, staring down at his bokken again.

“Ah huh.”
More vigorous Lion stare

“See, you, you get told you can’t handle something, so you go and do it anyway to prove you can. Because you’re the best, right? You’re the finest flyer around and everyone knows you’re good. And most of the time it works for you, because you are that good.”

Now going through her forms with a very deliberate slowness
“You know what happened to my squad when we got told we couldn’t handle it and our CO went in anyway? People got hurt. He was a brave and honour samurai and a dumb son of a bitch.”

Pause, a slight sigh
“I apologise, that language was not called for.”

Yul's lips twisted. He swung the sword sharply downward, ending at his side, the point inches from the ground. "I know, damnit! You don't have to..." Pausing, Yul ran a hand over his face, back through his hair, shaking just a little.

He took a deep breath, his expression returning to neutral. Another few moments, and he gave her an almost smile. "Sorry. It's just not fun to hear my own words out loud, you know? I am who I am, but... I don't want to put her through that again, either."

Another deep breath, and Yul rolled his shoulders, stretching. "So maybe I have to think a little more about who I am, and what's important to me, and what I should do about it." He grimaced. "Easier said than done."

“If it were easy it wouldn’t be a problem. Nothing important is easy.”
Shoan just simply pretends the outburst never happened

“Let me ask you this then. Do you care about her? Do you care about your squadron?“
She wanted to hear him say it.

Yul's chin rose a few inches. "Yes. I do." He said, his voice quiet but firm.

“And are you an idiot incapable of putting in any effort? Or are you a damn samurai?”

Yul's lips pulled back from his teeth. "A samurai." He said, his jaw noticeably clenched.

Calmly
“Good. Then you won’t have any trouble putting in the work needed to change yourself. It will take time, you might backslide but-“
She looks him dead in the eye
“You won’t fail, will you?”

Again, Yul's chin tilted up. "I won't." He said, his tone louder than before, and just as firm.

Yul's hand twitched, then he paused, blinking, confusion flickering over his features. Then he reached out, taking her hand and shaking it.

"Where did you learn this, anyway?" He said, confusion evident in his tone, even as he continued to pump her hand. "I thought this was a Unicorn only thing."

“Kitsu-san has made a study of your customs. It is... different, but I can see how it can cement a deal.”
Her grip is firm and the shake continues for some time, Shoan not really being sure how long one shakes for, before she releases

Yul knew just the right amount of pressure to use, and just how long to shake. He released her hand at the exact right time, the perfect handshake. "That makes sense. Kitsu-san seems like a smart one. Lots of reading."

He turned, moving to resume their previous distance. But a step or two, and he paused, looking back with a wry smile. "I'd almost suggest that we do a quick training bout, but I'm not sure I could use any more bruises. You hit pretty hard, huh?" His tone matched his expression, ruefully amused.

"Extremely hard, I was a bad child to face in the schoolyard if sticks were involved."
Shoan stick warred to win.

"And despite my earlier protestations, I have no desire to strike you with a bokken, even if sometimes such an urge seems sensible. Perhaps, if your mind is clear you could go to bed? I have heard good things about rest for a samurai."

Yul's lips quirked. "Some things never change."

He looked down at his bokken again, nodding slowly. "Perhaps I should. Or, at least, return to the dorms. I plan to turn in a bit early tonight. Gotta get up bright and early tomorrow." This time, his lips twisted, definitely a less pleasant expression.

Walking over, Yul replaced the bokken on the stand. "You still have more training to do, or are you gonna head back too?"

"I think even I am at my limit for today."
Shoan carefully returned her own weapon

"I killed two drifters and while it was not overly difficult there was quite a journey to get to their location."
A slight smirk
"I had my rifle though, and some backup, so don't get any ideas."

Yul's lips twisted, one eyebrow going up, but his expression finally settled on just slightly north of neutral.

"Oh? What sort of backup?" He asked.

“3 other heavily armed and armoured samurai. I believe you know two of them, a certain Wasp and Firefly? Daigotsu Ryuu was our final member.”

Seemingly slightly amused by Yul’s expression
“They are dangerous creatures indeed, but less so for a full squad of samurai.”
