Post subject: [D9 LA or EE] Side Event: Fan-Con
PostPosted: Thu Sep 24, 2020 3:46 am
This takes either the Late Afternoon or Early Evening time slot. Fan Con observation/Game threads during that time act as traditional 'Observation threads' and don't take a time slot.

Asako Chiruha and the few locals have been petitioning for a Fan-Con to be held at Shiro Yaoke for several years. Smaller conventions have been held, although they tend to be small affairs that fill up only one meeting room. Chiruha had endeavoured a Fan-Con to united several of these geek interests together to form a larger convention. The miai and its large influx of visitors had set the perfect stage to gather the needed numbers to officiate the con.

Her years of petitioning had finally paid off and the Society for the Study of Modern Visual Culture had given Chiruha their blessing in making this convention an official Fan Con, providing her with all of the necessary promotional materials and sponsors. This Fan-Con is a little different than others as Chiruha has personally managed the Con with the local committee to be more game focused. This Fan-Con's official mascot is a Fuu the Fawn. Deer and their related cousins are neither indigenous nor present on Asakase.

Magic: Magic is allowed.

The Con-Rush
With many events, dealers' tables, and aspects of fandom crammed into one place, attendees have limited time to celebrate their fandom before the inevitable closing of the con doors. As a result, they may select no more than three Fan-Con events in which to participate. They may only participate in each event once.

Game Developer Workshop and Showcase
The Game Developer Workshop and Showcase is Asako Chiruha's personal pet project. Ever since the resurgence of classic non-digital games in the Phoenix, there has also been an increasing wave of game developers hoping to create the next Space Colonist. This part of Fan Con allows those developers to show off their personal work to the public, some for the first time. Some of these games are played with the attendees to either gather more developmental data or raise interest toward a potential future release through demonstration. Asako Chiruha had been working on her own game, Explorer Fleet, for over a year now and hopes that her efforts have paid off.

Attendees may bring their own creations and showcase them here. Attendees may make either a Craft: Carpentry/Intelligence or Artisan: Painting/Awareness at TN20 to create their own game. On success, the attendee earns one Fan Point and two Fan Points for each successful raise called.

Role-Playing Games
Role-Player Games are a niche game even in the gaming community, which are a combination of storytelling, acting and savvy number crunching. There are a variety of tables arranged for this shared experience, often headed by a single story master who directs the flow of the game and provides their respective players with a memorable story. Attendees may participate as either a player or a story leader.

Player: Attendees wanting to participate in one of these games make an Acting/Awareness roll at TN10 to bring their characters to life before their fellow players. These games often have some crunchy mechanics involved and will require players to make a Commerce/Intelligence roll at TN10 to create a solidly-stated character. Each passed roll will earn the attendee one Fan Point. Further raises do not net more Fan Points.

Story Leader: Alternatively, attendees wanting to run such a game themselves make a Perform: Oratory/Awareness roll at TN15. On success, they gain one Fan Point and an additional one Fan Point for each raise called. Voice applies.

Cosplaying
Cosplaying began in the recesses of the Shosuro acting community, though their efforts were quickly rivalled by the Kakita artisans. Ever since, there has been competition among the two schools to replicate famous characters in fandom, an art which often involves recreating sometimes impossible costumes or creating fan variations that are still loyal to the characters in spirit. At the higher levels of the art, artisans are highly respected, some even earning sponsorships to promote certain characters. At the lower levels, where most of the cosplayers can be found, cosplay is considered merely an amusing and enjoyable way to show off their dedication to the original work.

Despite the focus on gaming, there is still a focus on cosplaying at the local Fan-Con. Con attendees wanting to cosplay can make a Craft: Tailoring/Intelligence or a Craft: Armorsmithing/Intelligence roll vs TN15. On success, this earns the attendee one Fan Point, and an additional Fan Point for each successful Raise called.

    Store bought
As an alternative to making their own costume, an attendee can opt to buy their costume instead. Yasuki and Wanatabe recreations of famous costumes have flooded the markets ever since cosplay became a thing. Store-bought costumes have less prestige among the community and it can be easy to spot a knockoff on Fish, but sometimes one might still be able to find an impressive enough costume to bedazzle other con-goers. Characters looking to buy their costume may make a Commerce/Perception roll vs TN15 to find a suitable costume instead. However, this generates zero Fan Points on a successful roll against the base TN, and one Fan Point for each successful Raise called.

Volunteering
Despite this being one of the smaller Fan-Cons in the galaxy, this Fan-Con is more than eager to accept the aid with running the Con. Fans themselves are this Con are generally manageable for at times need some directions around the con or need help to make some rules even more obvious. Volunteers are sometimes invisible and it can be a thankless job. Volunteers are given a free t-shirt to make themselves identifiable and each receives a personal thanks from Asako Chiruha.

Attendees choosing to volunteer earn one Fan Point without rolling.

True Miko: a Starlight Miko Crusaders experience
The samurai among the Phoenix are perhaps the largest fans of Starling Miko Crusaders among all of the Great Clans, as the Miko tradition has originated in the Phoenix Clan. Despite its liberal depiction of the tradition and its inaccuracies, some Phoenix even consider the show to be centred around their proud heritage. It comes to no surprise that the Starlight Miko Crusader fanbase is perhaps the portion of the convention that almost eclipses the game offerings led by Asako Chiruha. The fans have arranged a special obstacle course dedicated only to the true fans of the show.

For this event, attendees must pass the following rolls. Raise called here have no effect.
  • The challenger is treated to a lightning round of trivial questions about the show, encompassing both its ancestral series and contemporary spin-offs. There are a lot of questions and each participant is expected to answer them quickly than thoroughly. This is done by making a Lore: Starlight Miko Crusader/Awareness rolls at TN15.
  • Next, the Challenger must reminder and recite the full blessing incantations that allow the protagonist of the show to transform into the Starlight Miko Crusaders. While it had been simplified in recent history, the original series had the miko recite a rather accurate blessing. This requires a roll of Lore: Theology/Intelligence at TN20.
  • Finally, wielding a replica weapon of their respective magical miko, the participant is expected to form an accurate kata. This is done by making a Weapon roll/Agility roll at TN15 with any traditional melee weapon skill. Alternatively, they may make a Kyujutsu/Reflex roll at TN15.

Participants of the True Miko challenge earn one Fan Point for each roll they succeeded in. If all three rolls were successful, they gain an additional Fan Point (for a total of 4) and a limited edition Asakaze Fan Con exclusive figurine of a Starlight Miko Crusader of their choice. The figurine is of the respective Starlight Miko Crusader wearing the local Asakaze colonist jumpsuit rather than their usual fashion.

Space Colonist Tournament
Fan-Con is also hosting the Space Colonist Tournament, which is perhaps one of the few board games that still see some play, especially when most games have gone digital. In this game, players are tasked with forming their colony on a new planet and claiming certain continents as their territory. Each player must manage their resources and trade with their opponent, ensuring the survival and growth of their territories. The game finds itself quite popular on Asakaze, especially given the fact that the planet is still a growing colony.

Players of Space Colonist make a Hunting (Survival)/Perception roll at TN15, adding their ranks in either Commerce or Courtier to the roll. On success, the player gains one Fan Point and an additional Fan Point for each raise successfully called. The player of the game with the highest raises called is considered the winner of the tournament and gains +0.1 Glory. Ties are determined by the highest roll made among the victors.

Are you a Fan?
At the end of the event, the most dedicated fans at the convention are approached by a representative of the Society for Study of Modern Visual Culture and are rewarded for their commitment to the cause.

3-5 Fan Points: The attendee is granted a golden badge of honour to show off their attendance at the convention and their commitment to their fandom, earning them the title of 'Fan'. Additionally, the character gains +0.1 glory.

6+ Fan Points: The attendee is granted a chromatic bronze-orange badge of honour to show off their attendance at the convention and their commitment to their fandom, earning them the title of 'True Fan'. Additionally, the character gains +0.3 glory and a limited edition Fuu the Fawn plushie.

Normally, the Spider didn't have such grandiose events such as these...but since it was a miai, why not partake in a bit of fun?

Geppu decided to start off his day with some volunteering early, both as a way to continue to build his reputation as a compassionate and courteous samurai, hoping that perhaps it would earn him some points with the Phoenix. He was well-suited to the task, with good people management skills and an excellent sense of direction when it came to being able to get people to where they needed to go!

After his volunteering shift was over, he decided to wander over to the Starlight Miko Crusaders booth and after observing for awhile, his memory was jogged of a few bootleg episodes of the show that he remembered seeing as a child. When it came to the rapid fire questions, they thankfully asked about what he had seen and he passed the round. When it came to the precise chant used to transform the miko into their Starlight Crusader forms, he was a bit at a loss, because the sound quality was never outstanding and so he mumbled through a phrase, earning a shake of the head from the judges. When it came to the kata however, he was easily able to replicate the one he had seen of one of the miko who wielded a katana with a great deal of proficiency, copying her moves flawlessly.

Afterwards, he decided to take a trip over to the Space Colonist Tournament, sitting down to play and hopefully finding a few players to have fun with! After a quick run down of the rules, he grasped them amazingly quickly and found a winning strategy that crushed his competition, utilizing a combination of a trading outpost and a rare plant farm to churn out victory points hand over fist.
----
Volunteering earns a point! Starlight Miko Crusaders earns 2 points, bringing the total to 3! Space Colonist Tournament earns 3 points, bringing the total to 6 and earning the true fan status with the rewards entailed! Also paying a single koku for a limited edition figuirine and a koku for the Space Colonist board game since apparently Geppu is amazing at it!

Ryuu seemed out of place at a Fan Convention. His intense gaze, the lack of social graces. Those odd mannerisms.

He was actually not out of the ordinary for once.

The tournament for Space Colonist played right into his wheelhouse. His strategy focused on resource management, running lean on spending but making gains where possible. A risky strategem that could end with too many dead colonists, but he was able to truly bring out the potential of it. He did very well.

Then, he found himself in the RPG hall. An organizer from one of the indie game booths asked him, despite their initial hesistance, to run Other Realms: the narrative game of otherwordly creature romance, and the messy interpersonal lives.

He was an exceptional story guide, bringing the scenarios to life, encouraging shyer players out of their shell, and keeping alpha gamers in check with his own intense countenance.

Somehow, he was roped into volunteering, and the bright t-shirt clashed against his dark clothes and brooding demeanor. Creepy, yet helpful.

Ruhe was ready to roll the dice behind his story leader screen! It was meant to be the most epic of all adventures in fantasy worlds, heroism interspersed with metal!

LA9. Role-playing. The greatest, most heroic and metal RPG session in history! Perform! 3R! TN30!: 4d10o10k3 15

[0 Points and not gunning for more, but who wants to RP the tabletop experience for the fantasyception RPG equivalent of watching the Room?]

FanCon seemed like an ideal place to get lost in the buzz of it all, though she had debated for a while of not going at all.

No, appearances must be kept up.

Knowing that the best merch would disappear fast, Hyeon-ju descended on the dealer's hall like a whirlwind, picking up some rare limited edition items (including a figurine of Susumu Yakumo), as well as the hyped up Space Colonist board-game that many had lined up to secure a copy of. Some other small knick-knacks were picked up along the way, and seeing an old box of Fantasy Fight she bought it on a whim with the idea that it could maybe be a gift. She did the same for a couple of plushies. While she was mostly a fan of Shinjo Mai in SMC, she chose the costume of Matsu Hiroko for sentimental reasons as she finished her shopping round.

Having bought that Space Colonist game, she figured she might as well join in for a round of it, but being very new to the rules, she scrubbed out quickly, unable to find her focus. Though the mechanics seemed up her alley for another time.

Following that, she joined the line for the True Miko experience, where she showed an impressive knowledge worthy of a true fan of the Starlight Miko Crusaders, both regarding trivia on the show and the religious aspects of the Miko themselves. She finished showing off her nerd-cred by wielding a replica of Shinjo Mai's strange saber in a fancy kata.

With the evening calming down afterwards, she joined this thing called a Role-playing Game. The mechanics didn't make sense to her, but Hyeon-ju at least managed to have a good time with her fellow players as she seemed to enjoy the roleplay aspect of it.

Nara found the idea of fancon to be a fantastic one. At least, once someone had explained to her what it was about, and why it exists...and what she could do. THEN she thought it was an amazing idea. There was some confusion as to if she was in some kind of cosplay. She wasn't, but it was tough to tell!

As she'd been helped to understand what she was doing here, she returned the favour by spending the start of the con volunteering to give out information and fliers. After a short while it was advised for her to just give out fliers. Eventually she was told to just enjoy the con, and enjoy she did!

She managed to accidentally end up in a Starlight Miko Crusaders experience, and proved to have some knowledge on the topic - she was an actress, of course she knew about this! While her memory on the blessings was a bit off, her aim with the magic bow was not.

Her wandering drew her towards a table where people were acting! With dice, and figures and paper! What a weird thing! She learnt it was called roleplay, and nobody could really answer what the difference was between that and acting. So, the pretty and odd girl joined a group of boys to roleplay. She was so into her character, people watched her in awe as she acted out in body language and words what her character was doing. It was inspiring, and a few people clapped.

There was a bit of sadness when her character was killed, but she had no combat skills whatsoever and in the first combat her great character died. It was a dramatic death, and a few people suggested that she should consider being an actress...only to be told she was, not that they'd ever heard of her.

Fan-Con The Live experience, was not quite what Hayato had been expecting when he walked into the Red Carp mall. It did seem fun though, and the Mantis intended to make the most of his afternoon there.

First off he tried his hand at one of the roll playing games present, and did quite an impressive job of getting into his roll of Jin-do The Rogue alchemist. The stats he choose were even solid enough to let him excel. A pretty good result all things considered.

The Smc Experience was a bit of a let down though. It proved that just because you had little sisters that were fans of the show didn't mean you knew anything abotu it yourself. Still if was fun, and he had a good time trying his hand at it. Even if his arrow went far off target. Didn't they even check the pull on the bow?

It was the Space colonist tournament where he excelled though. While he might not be the best at managing money, he at least had a fair idea of how to procure and divide rescources among a small group, and it served him well.

So. It turns out that you can spend a lot of time and energy making your cosplay of the Creature from Planet IX....and then making children cry and feeling guilty about it meant he didn't keep it on.

On the positive side, volunteering was a lot easier outside of cosplay, and he could make it up to all those families whose children had been crying.

On the negative side, it turns out no one enjoys a game about successfully navigating the bureaucracy of a court as represented by wooden pillars.

[Early Evening]

Tetsu isn't done quite with his costume as quick as he thinks he would. He settles on a character from a Crab movie, the Iron Samurai. A rich artisan Crab turned expert merchant is set upon by bandits from a sale, who spare his life expecting a ransom but gravely wound him in the process. He is helped to escape by a captured shugenja, who links him to a powerful nemurai, which acts a power source for the weapons. Driven to reclaim his honor, he discards his old name and becomes the Iron Samurai, a genius weaponsmith who becomes a bane to bandits and enemies of his diamyo alike.

Image

Tetsu is rather pleased with the end result, and gets quite a few people pointing and wanting pictures. He can feel eyes on him as he presents his game, a card and piece game about combining robots, where you could choose up to five lesser units or combine them in desperate numbers. It's rough, but players seem to have fun, and he gets a lot of buzz! Tetsu is hailed as a super fan, a diamyo for a day.

Ishiyo got caught up in the fun of FanCon...but proved completely inept at very nearly every aspect of it. After her attempts at making a costume failed, she abandoned the project and just went in normal clothes. Deciding to hang out with the SMC crowd, Ishiyo was shocked how much she remembered about the show and even came close to reciting the incantations from the show. When she attempted to emulate one of the characters, Ishiyo's lack of practice with the sword was evident to everyone.

Giving up on impressing anyone Ishiyo decided to just help out for a little bit before finally leaving the con. She had had fun at least.

A small part of her felt guilty after not taking part in Chiruha's previous venture. This time.. this time she was determined. Showing up in some cosplay she made just a bit before, dressing as the Crane of the original run of the series. In tow with her was a small game of her own little creation. While the mechanics were basic, and there wasn't a whole lot going on it was a nice cutesy little game with well painted art displays and even some poetry worked into the titles of things. A theme that she was personally very fond of and those at the showcase seemed to agree!

For a while after the showcase she made her way around the con, helping out around the place in any way she was able! Always doing what she could with a pleasant little smile.

Shion was definitely more of a music geek than a geek of any other sort, but that didn't mean she'd never heard of or had any interest in other nerdy things.

She hadn't played RPGs often, but hey, she was a Sparrow, so it was hardly any surprise that she liked stories - and telling stories. Being able to have others take part in these stories, help tell them and have fun while at it was just a plus. So signing up as a Story Leader for a one-shot was the one thing Shion knew she would do when she got to the Con.

When she was signing up she considered the different possibilities - a survival horror game about zombies taking up a planet might be interesting, but considering the latest developments she didn't quite feel in the mood for anything like that. So she went for a nice, light-hearted, hopefully funny game with a cartoony feel in which the characters represented antropomorphic animals - Tsuki-toons. She tried to use impersonations, funny voices and add songs and impromptu sound effects here and there to add to the fun of the game - an adventure in which the characters were trying to find food and good places to rest while they crossed a desert while a coyote tried to hunt them. That seemed to work nicely, and the players seemed to have a really good time!

She then tried her luck at the Starlight Miko Crusaders experience. She wasn't one of the hardcore fans, but she had watched it when she could back then, she liked the show's soundtrack, and it still evoked a sense of nostalgia in her. Although... apparently the Nostalgia was not enough to help her remember enough trivia of the show, or the details of the blessings used in the show. At least she could swing a sword well enough to do well in that part of the SMC experience...

With some more time remaining, she considered her options. She might like to try a board game, but she didn't feel she could grasp the rules for Space colonist well enough in that time, and there was quite some hype, so she decided to steer clear of that one. Then there was that group of people bringing their own games, or trying to create games there. She hadn't really considered the possibility before, but maybe...

She came closer to Asako Chiruha, whom she hadn't really met or spent much time with before, but she had heard quite a bit about. The girl's game looked interesting, and she tried to understand what it was about, even see if she could have a chance to play. She then decided - ah well, I could go ahead and try something too. It surely wouldn't be as good as Chiruha's game, but maybe with a good idea and some work...

She decided to go and create a music-based game, "Harmonautics", in which players were given or decided on a simple melody at the start and had to take turns using cards in which instruments were represented as spaceships to change aspects of the rhythm and/or add notes to create a harmony - the players who contributed more to harmonic or 'interesting' cadences got more points. Lots of details of the games' rules and such were obviously incomplete when she was done, but she did remarkably good work with the Guitarceptors, Flutegates, String-cruisers, Drumnoughts and so on in the cards, and by the end the board was noteworthy.

In the end she was quite happy with the result, and she even managed to play a few test-runs with some of the other participants.

It had been a really long time since Akagi had watched Starlight Miko Crusaders, so he was at a loss when the quiz show emcee demanded, “In which episode does Daigotsu Ayame make her first heel-to-face turn and why?” The Scorpion kicked himself when the correct answer was revealed: a complicated misunderstanding involving an unlikely wager and a case of mistaken identity where a local nobleman was unable to tell the difference between the Spider and Scorpion miko.

Despite that misstep, the Bayushi was able to recite the full miko blessing, which had somehow been imprinted on his mind as a child after entirely too many episodes. And when they handed him a cartoonishly large foam scimitar, Akagi was able to execute a pretty good imitation of Shinjo Mai’s signature horse-cutting-sword-kata, which involved several mighty slashes interspersed with balletic pirouettes atop a sawhorse that was the stand-in for the Unicorn miko’s trusty steed.

Stepping down from the Starlight Miko Experience, Akagi was swiftly roped into being the sixth player at a table of Starlight Miko: The Role Playing Game. With the players encouraged to create their own, original characters, the Scorpion rolled up Toku Sukina, an abusively mini-maxed character the was able to use the overpowered Monkey Miko technique in every combat.

This was fun for awhile, but as the game went on, Akagi had to contrive to get Toku Sukina killed before the next time slot so he could join the Space Colonist tournament. After fudging some dice to overcome Sukina’s overpowered stats, Akagi was able to act out a tearfully melodramatic Starlight Miko Crusader death scene before exiting the game.

Sadly, Space Colonist proved to be a disappointment, as the Bayushi chose to employ the protozoa-and-microbe strategy to terraform planets for colonization. Everyone else knew the microbe strategy was too slow for the current metagame, which favored comet impacts and strip mining. After washing out of the tournament early, Akagi wandered over to the demo area to check out some of the new board games being offered.

Honagi-sensei took in the samurai gathered at fan-con.

"Hmm, yes, amidst so much darkness there exists tiny little lights. They burn so brightly, pushing back the endless darkness, but it's when they disappear we truly understand what they meant to us."

Cosplay: 29 vs. 15

1 Fan Point

He made his way slowly over to the volunteers table to spend some time dispensing advice to those who were lost.

"Ah, yes, time runs short young one. How will you spend it? Your decision will guide your path, and my directions."

1 Fan Point

Finally, he made his way over to the game developer's workshop to demonstrate a game: Satsu's Dilemma. It was a hybrid trivia game/dungeon explorer. You choose a course of action, and were then posed a trivia question. Correctly answering the question meant the exploration went well, and failing it meant it went poorly.

Unfortunately, it was definitely definitely not balanced correctly yet. A lot of the choices were frustratingly unclear. 'On the wall there are two buttons.' doesn't really give players an idea of which button they should press, or even if they should press, and then the trivia questions for even the simplest actions are mindbreakingly obscure. 'You order a salad. What was Hantei XVI's favorite summer vegetable?' and failing that question killed their character by choking. The game wasn't a bad idea...but it earned far more critique than any actual praise.

Int/:Craft Carpentry, Void, 14 vs. 20 Fail

"Well, if you do not care for this game, perhaps you should find the one you are suited for?"

Only earned 2 fan points and a t-shirt. Plus possibly some private shopping.

Tenma was into games, a bit. Not so much lately as she used to be. Cosplay though? The chance to dress up like someone heroic? She was all over that!

Making a basic costume using accessories she'd packed with her, she made a hasty version of Galactic Guardian Girl's outfit from Space Magistrate Force 9001.

Image

Then she energetically flitted around the convention space, play-arresting people dressed up as villains, oohing and aahing at the various merchandise (that she had no intention to buy and try to pack while leaving), and listening to speakers.

Mostly, she was just happy to pretend and take photos.

(EE slot)

Akemi was on an infiltration mission in nerd land. Her chosen persona was a gushing Starlight Miko Crusaders fan. She had never seen the show, but how hard could it to pretend she had seen it? Just needed to nod her head at what other fans were saying, and complain about the merchandising-driven aspect of spin-offs.

She had bravely elected to task Kyoko with making her a Starlight Makoto (the Starlight of Thunder) costume instead of making it herself. The poor servant had managed to throw together a mace that, under the right angle and lighting, could almost look the part. However, the rest of the costume was... lacking. Like it was really lacking: There was none. Akemi was just wearing her normal clothes while parading with a cardboard mace.

To compensate for that, she quickly bought two costumes, one for her and one for the other side of the team. Weapon and clothes were not from the same character but... Fusion OC?

To perfect her cover, she showed up at the Starlight Miko Special Event where she certainly helped her competitors relax. Though a couple might have had a stroke when hearing some of her answers.

There. Infiltration nailed.

Joo sat down opposite of a Spider samurai, ready for the Space Colonist tournament! He played well, even reaching the the higher brackets, but he was pretty sure he won't be the champion this time. Alas.

Next, he joined Ruhe's game, playing as a pacifist Exorcist who used zithers to exorcise ghosts. It was a pretty fun game!

Finally, he tried his hand at the SMC trials. He did not get the right answer at first, but he was so close!!! Luckily, he got the others, though that meant he missed out on the limited edition figurine. Too bad. Hoshiko might've liked it.

Nozomi felt a little awkward celebrating so soon after a funeral. But she also convinced herself that none of her clan wanted her to spend all day not participating in the miai.

First she presented her alternate ruleset to a game she had played a bit at home, Space Colonist. Unfortunately, she overtund the Lion faction for... reasons.

Next she went up to the Shosuro and tried to work out a costume. She wasn't in the mood to try too hard but fortunately what she had was practically already perfect. She was already wearing a turtleneck and glasses. A short bob wig and a newly made skirt were all she needed to be part of some teenage investigator group that she had heard so much about.

Now in her outfit, it was time for her vengeance. She went in and slowly, but surely, made sure to take it home at Space Colonist.

Nishida went to the fan-con that Chiruha had organized and was surprised how many people were there. Apparently the phoenix had quite a lively fan culture. He himself tried not to be too conspicuous in his casual wear, even though it was a bit more high-class than what others wore. But maybe others would think that he was just cosplaying, after all he looked quite similar to a character from the famous crab-anime series Jigokusign,...

Nishida didn't have a lot of plans at the con and had only come because Chiruha thought they might need help with the volunteers. So he got in touch and got a beautiful volunteer shirt,... but instead of showing people the way and handing out leaflets, he did what he did best: organize. He assigned other volunteers and gave the Heimin helpers orders. After making the process more efficient, he allowed himself a tour of the Con.
Volunteering Work! +1 Fan Point

After playing a round of Explorer Fleet with Chiruha, Mal-Chin, Akagi and Izumi, he started painting figures. He considered adding a custom faction to the game and set about creating the glorious Carp Syndicate. Unfortunately he was not very good at painting these little figures and gave up after about half of the figures. He made a note in his densai: 'Hire servants for painting'.
[[D9:LA] Artisan: Painting/Awareness; VP for Skill: TN20: 4d10o10k3 18]

He also tried his hand at the Space Colonist tournament. Some of the mechanics reminded him of Explorer Fleet and he tried his best. Unfortunately, Nishida had overplayed his hand and lost territory after territory because he was too greedy with his resources. A bit cranky he walked away from the tournament.
[[D9:LA] Hunting(Survival)/Perception; VP for Skill; 2CR; Commerce 2; TN25: 4d10o10k3+2 23]

At last he moved around the booths to buy some merchandise. He saw some stuffed animals from the local fauna,... should he? Would she be happy?

....

Nishida went with a stuffed animal that reminded him of a distant relative of an Otori who apparently stole eggs.

He also picked up a copy of Space Colonist. Would he practice it secretly with Akechi? Would he? Who knows!

After she first moved into the city, Hoshiko discovered the wonderful world of gaming. Roleplaying games, board games, card games, miniature games, video games and more helped fill the void she felt beside her without her sister. Not every game appealed to her, of course, but she found she enjoyed the theatrics of roleplaying and board games reminded her of nights on the ranch.

Hoshi was ready for an evening of gaming and readily volunteered to help anyone how needed some assistance.
